Sighs

Our much loved mare Little Lil gave birth to her first foal - a beautiful bay little man with good dark hooves, long legs, his mother's ears and the softest mane I've ever touched. Sadly he was born sleeping and we buried him in a gully where we have planted birch trees. We named him Coomara after the station where his mother was born. Obviously we are devastated.

Oh @Sweetpea76 - its been awful. My vet blames himself. He had a full on flashback to dying kids in Ghan that he tried to save and couldn't. As he dug the grave he was talking to the foal and he kept saying "I won't be long after you little man."

So sorry...I have been through that myself. Not fun.... I think God has a way of protecting the animals from hardship. If he wasn't meant to run and play and pick grass then perhaps he needed to start over... Maybe the good Lord knew he wasn't healthy and decided not to put him through that.... It's hard to make sense of those things.

Dear @Sighs, yes indeed, that's very sad news... May I respectfully ask...How's the mare doing now? - I once saw a documentary about animal mothers who lost their baby / babies and how they were grieving. I was just recently thinking about that documentary... As they showed also a mare who lost her newborn within just a few hours. They let her share some time with the dead foal. So that she could understand and "say goodbye" to it... To witness their deep sadness and grief was truly heartbreaking.

May I offer to light a comforting candle for the three of you?

All 5 of the horses came to the burial site. The mare came close and sniffed her little boy. She stood beside us as my veteran dug the grave. The other horses stood a little distance away. Not eating - just watching. After we buried him, the mare came over and stood at the grave and sniffed the stones we placed over him. She then walked over to the other horses and they all stood around her clearly comforting her. It was so terribly sad but also beautiful to watch.
