Thanksgiving plans for one

Trying to come up with plans for this months holiday in the USA. I decorated by getting some silk fall leaves and a strand of silk sunflowers in a cut crystal pitcher. That is the extent of my decoration for this holiday.

I used to get intensely sick every Thanksgiving until a few years after I got married and the sick triggering effects went completely away.

Now I am wanting to have a mini celebration so I have a whole chicken for the crock pot or a cornish game hen in a baked form. Have not decided yet.

What are your plans if you live in the states? I am looking to make new traditions and want tips and ideas, on a positive side. No negative posts please, I already know that family holidays are a huge trigger for many.

I don't cook. My husband insists that we hosted one year and I said, "no, I have never made a turkey!" He reminded me that he made the turkey. Lol. I personally like to get most of the stuff from the local grocery store or a restraunt and reheat it.

I have to have sweet potatoes, those really good rolls that come as frozen dough at the grocery store, I prefer green bean casserole or something green beans. I like both cranberry jello dressing with celery in it and that canned cranberry jelly.

Watch some cooking tv shows for ideas too. I like that you are celebrating each holiday. As exhausting as it is, I do decorate for each holiday. It makes me happy.

I do all the cooking, which is fine bc my dad can’t cook to save his life and I enjoy it. Brother and sister in law will come over and maybe a friend. I stick to pretty traditional food with my own flair. Desserts is where I go crazy and try new recipes. Last year I did a creme brûlée pumpkin pie w chocolate crust and a pumpkin cheesecake. One year we ended up somehow w 8 pies which I don’t believe you can end up w too many pies but it was hilarious. I love watching cooking shows and reading magazines for ideas, I’ll try a new one here and there. Cooking is my way of expressing how I care I guess.

I still get a bit sick at Thanksgiving. After my partner died I tried volunteering to serve meals but too much noise and chaos. Then a few years ago I bought a turkey breast and found some fun recipes. On Thanksgiving I slept in, got up and turned on Xmas music, and cooked all afternoon and danced and sang at the top of my lungs. I had a meal for one with linen napkin, candles, etc. It was a blast. I have only done it once but I think of it as my new tradition when I'm feeling well.

I'm having two thanksgivings!

My boyfriend and I were a bit upset over not spending the holidays together. I said what's stopping us from celebrating on a different day? I'm about to hop a plane to go see him, so my first thanksgiving will be in the next few weeks.

My second thanksgiving is with my mom. We are going to volunteer serving meals and then have our own dinner afterward.

I suppose I could have a third thanksgiving with my dad, but that relationship is so strained that it would feel just awkward to go over there. I just need to find a way to let him know I'm not coming.

The holidays always stress me out. My husband and I, and many of our friends, live far away from our extended families, so usually we'll just get together at a friend's house with the other friends that stayed in town and do a pot luck. I come from a large Sicilian family, and my Thanksgivings growing up never had turkey, instead we'd do a large lasagna, pastas with sausages, meatballs, etc. My favorite is stuffed artichoke, so now when we do pot lucks, I make those.

I don't really speak to my family anymore, the older generations that I loved are gone, and my father is a racist jerk. So we don't even factor their plans in with ours.

My father in law lives 2 hours away, so one year we went to his house for a traditional Thanksgiving dinner, which was fine, he's a nice guy and my husband's step mom is a pretty good cook. My mother in law lives 6 hours away, and she would rather be alone on Thanksgiving, so we haven't done anything with her yet.

Christmas is another story. My ex and I alternate Christmas/New Year's with my daughter, and this year I have New Year's so we probably won't do anything for Christmas. We don't really like chancing what the weather will be like for traveling, so I usually end up just cooking a nice meal at our house. We'll get together with friends and do gift exchanges the week before Christmas.

I did that before and it was my husbands idea, so easy to do. Maybe take out like chinese food for me?

I am glad to be decorating this year for each holiday. I think it is time to rejoin the land of the living this year, I am tired of grieving past losses of family members. Thank you for saying that to me.

I know you will have a lovely time with them.

Best day I had in a long time.

I will try to keep this in mind for myself and try to think positively, so thank you.

I could do something new and different too. I will have to think about this one so thank you.

I have a new game plan. Chinese food sounds really good to me too. I think I am going for it. Great movies too by the way. Thank you.

I think that is a great plan. Have a lot of fun. Thank you for sharing.

That sounds so yummy. It really does and I love artichokes and if I can I will pick one up for me to do something special, so thank you.

Yep, I'll be alone too. I'm working and damn glad I am. I offer to work all holidays for this reason and get holiday pay out of it. I'll take the distraction that all my family hates me and I am fully 100% alone on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day!

Here is something I have always done though. I save all year for a big Christmas gift for myself that I have been really wanting. This year it will be a tv for my room so I can finally watch Netflix and Amazon video in here. I have a tube tv in here now. One year it was 50 inch flat screen in the livingroom and the year before was the wireless blueray connected to it (that I couldn't use for a year because I had the first ever made HD rear projection tv at the time which didnt have an HDMI port so it was like 2 gifts in one). I have done that since I was 18. It helps, some, the feeling of not getting any gifts on Christmas.

I would say volunteer if possible too. I also go all out on Christmas decorations (and used to decorate so on Thanksgiving night watching the Kansas City plaza lights on tv. Sadly I'm no longer there).

For Thanksgiving I have no plans but workinf, coming home, training Chopper, going to bed, wake up and do it again. Holidays, sadly, are just another day for me. If left to my own devices I can be very distructive. Especially this year so though I have no idea yet if I am working Christmas, I am damn glad I am working Thanksgiving!

I love holiday specials and anything festive. Thanksgiving is Charlie Brown, the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade, and The Westminster Dog Show.

I do Black Friday shopping, but I don't do the really scary stuff. Michaels always has a coupon that lets you take an extra percentage off of stuff that is already on sale, so I go to pick up all the little things that I've wanted throughout the year. I'll also be picking up stuff to make gifts and Christmas cards. If you go to smaller stores and don't go right after the sales starts, it can be a good time.
