First, let me say that it's not exclusive to a five-year old with autism. My father bought that book for the TAG system for my daughter and she was almost equally obnoxious about it.
But what I really wanted to say was...Oh, Grainne, that brings back such good memories for me. When I used to work I was a behavioral specialist. I spent my career working with people with developmental disabilities. But my favorite job of all time was when I worked with a group of adolescent males who all had autism, mental retardation and severe behavior problems. I worked with this one boy who was about 14 at the time and he found anything to do with farts hilarious. Out of nowhere he would start yelling about farts, really big farts and just bust out laughing. Obviously, it was something we tried to work on with him as it was not very socially acceptable when in public. But there was one time when some staff members took a group of the boys to the movies...I don't remember what movie it was (something animated) but at one point there was a reference to farts. This young man (in a full theater) busted out laughing, ran to the front of the theater and started slapping the movie screen as he yelled about big farts, really big farts. The staff members were mortified. He was a great guy, though, and your story just reminded me of him and the other boys that I worked with. Such good memories. Thank you.
