Tolerant To Trazodone ?

Has anyone else noticed that they became tolerant to trazodone after taking taking it for a certain period of time? I switched to it earlier this year in order to wean myself off of ambien and it worked well... until the last few weeks.

I still get drowsy from it and can fall asleep initially, but I'm up shortly thereafter for the duration or at least tossing and turning very restlessly "sleeping" until I wake up again an hour or two later.

Lately I've been taking ambien when I wake up so I can fall back to sleep. Obviously not the direction I have wanted to go in.

I know if I ask my doctor he will just recommend an increased dosage as I'm only on 50 mgs currently which I understand to be on the lower end.

Has anyone else had this issue??

Yes, that happened for me. Trazadone is actually meant to be an antidepressant, and they just discovered along the way it made people so drowsy, it's now primarily used as a sleep medication. So it's basically a side effect that some people get used to over time.

I switched to vistaril (an antihistamine now also used primarily for sleep and anxiety) and now I go back and forth between the two. It seems to keep my body from getting too adjusted to either med.

I've been taking 150 MGs of Trazadone for a few years now and Remeron 1/2 tab for a few months for sleep.
Both do the trick.

Interesting point. I noticed that while going through Complex PTSD which I still am, I never really had nightmares before the PTSD like I was until Remeron was prescribed. Perhaps the Trazadone was affecting the nightmares?

That happen to me. First worked great. Then over months useless till I stopped taking it. There was no point anymore.

Whereas before it used to work routinely, now it seems to goes up and down depending on what's going on in my life. I think the key is being able to relax into it... right!

I did notice that my nightmares increased when I switched from ambien to trazodone, but I think that had more to do with the ambien knocking me out cold so that I just didn't realize I was having them.

Still holding out hope that I'll be able to sleep without taking meds one day soon!

@CRPS how long did it take for you to go up to 150 mg? And do you feel drugged the next day? I'm only on 50 mg currently (I went up to 75 at one point, but felt drugged the next morning so went back down again).

Yeah I'm on 50 mg and 2mg of melatonin... and I fall asleep initially but wake up after 4 hours and then rest. I guess I only need four hours sleep? That seems silly though. I don't think the trazadone is working for me I'll give it a little longer as I am actually getting some sleep. Mind you I also listen to an app called *deep sleep with Andrew Johnson* to relax enough to get to sleep so.. it could be that and the trazadone is doing nothing lol. I have no f*cking clue but this lack of sleep sucks that is for damn sure.

I am with you all the way. I just sounded like a total airhead talking to my neighbor because I am way too exhausted at this point in the day to string together a coherent sentence or pretend like I can small talk like a normal person.
