Latest research from a national sample of almost 10,000 US adolescents found psychological trauma, especially abuse and domestic violence before age 11, can increase the likelihood of experimentation with drugs in adolescence, independent of a history of mental illness. This is the first study to document these associations in an American national sample of adolescents.

I mean it's cool that it's the first study to verify this, but it does seem like common sense. It reminds me of a study that confirmed that having a visor periodically obstruct your vision will negatively impact driving performance, like it was the first one to confirm it but the hypothesis seems pretty guaranteed. For what it's worth I did start drinking pretty heavily at around 12 (luckily only lasted a couple of years and I don't notice any effects from it), I mean things like drinking are effective ways in the short term to forget about past or ongoing trauma and especially kids are unlikely to consider the negative long term effects.
