I had a different flashback today, one where I was punished for speaking and told to shut up repeatedly. My friend came to help me while I was in the flashback, she brought me back but even afterwards I couldn't speak.

The noises around me were too loud and I couldn't speak, every time I tried I got too afraid. Eventually I stuttered a word and slowly started to produce sentences but whispered quietly. She asked me why I can't speak. I only managed to say that I was told to shut up and hurt if I didn't.

Does it mean I wasn't as well grounded as I thought? I was aware of my surroundings but just couldn't bring myself to speak. This has never happened before.

I get mutism when I am quite triggered and fairly often. I keep telling my friends who are concerned to enjoy the silence while they can! lol. It sounds like your senses were affected by your flashback and that you were fully invested in the feeling of being told to shut up. Many times I will find out after the feeling is gone what the trigger actually was. I don't want you to post it unless you insist so that you don't go back into that moment again but I am wondering if you can identify what took you into that feeling?

@shimmerz I think the flashback was started by feeling trapped, my feet got tangled in my blanket when I went to get up and I panicked then everything went to flashback. I hate feeling restrained or trapped. The memory it triggered is one where I wasn't allowed to speak for a long time, it lasted hours before I was able to leave and went home, but the main punishment was being locked in a cupboard under the stairs.
