I'd like to add that I think some people share their story to demonstrate a level of understanding and empathy to a post as to say "I understand" is something so broad and hollow at times. If someone shares a similar story in a thread I feel they are trying to show they 'identify' with what was said. The level of detail then becomes the personal part.

Yes, like Nicolette said above, I almost feel obligated to share some details, in order to try to help or understand or support. Because really no where elsewhere would I for just the sake of saying any of it.

That's what I was trying to convey earlier as well nicolette. It's a way of comforting the other person and letting them know they are not alone. It's also a way for the person sharing their story to feel like they are not alone as well, so it's win/win.
