Usa "wellness checks"...what happens?

I've never had one called on me as when I was suicidal/attempted, no one knew until after the fact but my step mom called one on her brother when he was suicidal. He had sent her a "I love you/goodbye text" and had been suicidal priviously. They just knocked on his door and peaked in the windows when they didn't get an answer in a few mins. To make sure there was no one holding a gun to their head or a dead body or something. When he finally came to the door, they advised that they had a wellness check call and they were just checking to make sure he was ok and they came in and just did an eyeball check for what I would assume is guns, knives, pills etc. His means was by an entire bottle of methadone the following day which was in the fridge (which they didn't find obviously). Asked if he felt like hurting himself or anyone else. Talked for a very brief moment to obtain possible *obviously suicidal but lyinig about it* mindframe and they gave him some suicide/depression type resources and left.

It's not to invade on privacy but to just make sure you are ok or if you need help (attempted or about to). They do wellness checks a lot on the elderly for the same reason. I wouldn't worry that much. I am thankful we have wellness checks here in the US as if someone had attempted suicide/elderly had a heart attack/etc, that can save their life!

I had a friend who kept complaining that she ran out of medicine at the end of every month. This went on for 3-4 months. So I called the Police and reported it and asked them to do a Wellness Check and make sure she had enough medicine. (She had a brother who was her Legal Guardian and she kept saying he would not give her the money for her medicines).

Well, the Police went and checked on her and found the situation to be as I described. They initiated a blood test (she told me later) to see what levels of medicine were in her blood. She was depleted in several medicines, of course.

She was placed in an Assisted Living Facility for folks with Dementia, as it may have been that she was either forgetting to take her meds sometimes or was taking them twice or 3 times, due to having forgotten that she had already taken them.

I have been to visit her where she is now and she is happy there. (She is 79 yrs old).

So, the Wellness Check will depend upon what the person who calls the Police tells them. I gave them details, including that she had a Legal Guardian who was not seeing to it that she was well. In other words, she was being neglected and that was proven to be true by the blood test and other questioning.

My coworker disappeared. Didn't come to work for three days. Because of internal regulations and agreements with the union, my boss had to wait till the fourth day to call relatives or police. Police went to do the wellness check. They had the apartment management open the door and found my coworker. He'd been dead for days. Died of natural causes. First and only time I've heard of local police entering a home. Usually they knock and leave.

Might depend on the area but here they have to try to gain entry without forcing in. So unlocked door or window, peaking into windows and if suspect dead or injuried then forced, or a apartment manager, friend, or family that has a key to give permission. Someone has to give permission, I believe, and I don't think they can force entry.

But its for that reason. Possible dead or injured person.

My ex used to have these done on me as a method of harassment. The police didn't care, and would try to tell me that I was lucky to have someone worry about me so much.I would tell them I was fine, and they would say "No matter what you are going through, life is going to get better." and I would be like "I just got engaged, I am pretty damn happy except for my ex who is trying to scare my fiance off, so can I file harassment charges?" They would look confused, tell me they didn't get involved in domestic squabbles and leave."
