What would be nice is for you to drop him off a box of chocolates with a 'thanks!' note on it - so he gets some feedback from you. It may help him to remember you in a week or so time.

He knocked on my door and brought me some brownies. Said he didn't know he was making that much noise. He asked me if it was quiet enough now. I said yes, everything is fine now. We both smiled.

I'm loving this outcome so much. Especially right now where people are super anxious, particularly about strangers.

Sometimes finding a way to extend kindness, the way that you did, doesn't get you anywhere.

Me, too! I have the same issue, i.e., not wanting to say things to neighbors in situations like this. You got a fantastic outcome though, just being a little creative in how you approached the situation. Kudos!
