Hi, I'm new here, in fact I'm new to PTSD. I've recently become involved with a OIF vet with PTSD. He is getting treatment, and has been very open and honest about his condition... however, I realize that I'm treading new water here in the role of a supporter. I'm researching and reading, but after 5 months, it is obvious that advice from other supporters is needed as well.

Thanks Discarded... I've been searching around through topics, and have seen some good things in just a few hours.

I think all of us just want the best for our sufferers otherwise we wouldn't bother supporting them anymore. We all try so hard. Some of us have success, others don't and unfortunately I fall into the latter category. That doesn't mean we all shouldn't try if we believe our sufferers are worth it. The hard part is knowing when it is all coming at too big a cost to our own personal well being. I have reached that point and now have to look after me for a while. I wish you all the best for you and your partner and pray that you find happiness together despite the obsatcles you face.

Hi Sweetpea,

Welcome to the PTSD Forum! :)

There is an entire section for Supporters, where you will find information and the support that you will also need.

Wishing you the best.

Debbie

Thanks all! I just had my first experience with 'lashing out,' which lasted the entire, exhausting, weekend. My normally sweet vet turned into a mean, nasty A-hole who took offence at everything I said, and accused me of patronizing him and being insensitive when I really wasn't. Of course now he has settled down (he saw his shrink yesterday) and is apologetic and interested in talking things all the way out... so I came here to see how other supporters may have handled situations like this. I want to help him and not cause any aggravation, but I don't want to be a doormat and put up with treatment that I wouldn't tolerate from people without PTSD. Researching the disorder doesn't exactly help out much in these matters.
