What does it mean to be a good person?

Human beings are social animals with emotions and feelings, hence the need for religion is minimal to discern right from wrong.
Our ape friends also have social creatures and laws, for example.

*Not creatures, behaviours. Auto incorrect, sorry.

I think personal values and ethics come to play in this good/bad thing in a big way.

In my family of...
The social construct needs to change and our laws reformed to stop putting so many people in jail that don’t belong there. The biggest one is changing the drug laws (I’m in the US so not sure how other countries work). That means making drugs legal or changing how drugs are scheduled. That’s another debate. Isn’t “conservative values” to keep families together yet because of our ridiculous drug laws put people (mostly men) in jail for using or having drugs that are not even dangerous for years? Ruining so many lives.

The current social constructs are put into place to serve others - not the general populace.

I currently take a very dangerous drug! Marijuana. *Oooooh, ahhhhhhh, shake shiver! Not Marijuana!*

It is SO dangerous a drug that I have a 50 ml bottle or 5 and was told to figure out my own dosage! Sooooooooo dangerous! Thank god they kept our streets safe by throwing these drug dealing degenerates in jail. Sorry, just for clarification I mean street dealers, not psychiatrists.

My life has changed for the better, I have my brain back in my skull, and somehow everyone has forgotten how incredibly dangerous this drug is.

Social construct being deconstructed because they have finally figured out how to tax the shit. This all disgusts me.

Yeah...and in really conservative states like the one I live in, it’s still considered dangerous and CBD oil is extremely dangerous! Give me a break!

Also, is it about 30 years of research had been halted for the use of MDMA and certain psychedelics to be used to treat many psychiatric disorders in a therapeutic setting because they were extremely dangerous. Finally research is being done and finding a lot of success to help so many people in many different ways. That is another one that really pisses me off.

Mdma and lsd and ketamine are not weed.
All of them are dangerous in an uncontrolled setting, I've seen it happen too many times not to take that into account.
My country decriminalized drugs and heroin is still rampant. Lots of people in the psych wards due to drugs, they don't go to jail and I agree that's a plus right?
There has to be infrastructure to help addicts, and therapeutic settings to help those in need without creating more addicts.
The idea that those drugs are not addictive is a fallacy too.

Don't get me started on this. I am a huge proponent of these drugs literally being life altering (positive) for people who suffer with PTSD.

30 years + MAPS has been jumping through all the hoops the government has forced them to go through. Lots of documentation on how these drugs helped psycologists in days past help patients. But no..... instead they encourage drugs that have black labels on them. Or completely destroy one's sense of agency. Nope. Those drugs are okay....

scientific research
All of what scientific research implies - subject, testing, methods, conclusion, etc - is important and should be read carefully. There's a lot of quacks out there with a lot of citations.

I used to be heavy in the drug scene. Fact.
Most people I know who were as heavy as I was suffered mental and physical health consequences. Fact.
There's plenty of research to support this, which doesn't invalidate the research on the benefits of said drugs.

the whole drug issue is about personal freedom as dictated by the federal state.

I don't think anyone ever really thought that legalizing marijuana (in my state and others) was done so that people who needed it therapeutically could get it legally. The whole medical marijuana argument was valid and in my opinion valuable, but c'mon, the vast majority of the voters that passed these measures and initiatives were voting based on personal experience and the opinion that it does no harm. The people that got the issue in front of the voters had to use some form of leverage, scientific proof was something that a state legislator could use to camouflage the true reason they put it up for a vote without upsetting their conservative constituents. I think we can all agree that the tax revenues, the scientific proof, the medical benefits and a dozen other reasons to legalize it take a backseat to the true reason it was done in some states: People wanted it decriminalized so they could have the freedom to use or not use without the fear of prosecution.

To tie this back into the discussion, marijuana use or any drug use is OK by me, until you take away my right to drive on a street where everyone else is as sober as I am because it is the law. That's just selfish, driving drunk or stoned because you want to be somewhere and my safety doesn't matter to you, bad act. And supporting a drug habit through theft? selfish, that was my stuff and you took it because of your addiction, bad act. Selling drugs to minors to support your habit? We have to come up with a punishment even harsher than the ones we used to dole out on the people that were in possession with intent to distribute for that one. Making a few bucks at the expense of a child's cognitive development has got to be about as selfish as you can get when it comes to the abuse of legalised drugs. BAD ACT.
