What Is Your Favorite Fall Activity?

I have a few favorites when it comes to fall. Apple picking, walking my dogs in the park with the leaves full of warm colors and the coolness and crispness of the air, enjoying apple cider, apple pie and pumpkin pie, fall decorating, the cozy warmth and smell of fall candles, curling up with light blankets at night while reading or watching movies, and making fresh cinnamon bun popcorn (cinnamon caramel corn with pecans straight out of the warm oven with white chocolate drizzled on top is so crunchy and yummy).

Now that's a recipe I want Curiouser! It sounds heavenly ;o) I LOVE football! Can't say I love that my 49ers lost their 5th game in a row tonight though ;o) We've started a new tradition, Family Football Sunday at our son's house. They always do a mega BBQ and tonight I brought my homemade apple pies that my best friend and I baked yesterday. All 3 of our sons, my daugher in-law and 3 granddaughters and assorted other friends. What a great way to spend a Fall Sunday afternoons and evenings!

Thanks MUCH-just copy/pasted all that. I have an inkling also it might have something to do with the amount of flour one has on the board, and possibly if one gives the rolling pin a good coating of it? The whole thing seems so touchy it seems every dam GRAM of flour counts. There are a couple of elements I had not been doing-I knew cold water, but had not ben using ice, and did not know to roll from the center. Hmm. Thanks MUCH, for taking this sort of time with this. It's not all that far off the thread, i don't think, since you're making autumn far lovlier by helping eradicate all the butt-ugly pies out there. There's got to be some sort of humanitarian award in it for you in the end, don't you think?

Nice looking apple pies, pecans with white chocolate ( that sounds ridiculously good ) and watching the football-autumn! I'd engage in some trash talking on the 49er's but the Steelers lost their last game and our quarterback is having a tough time not behaving badly. You'd win that one, hand's down, even with a 5 and 0.

Hi anni

Don't mean to hijack your pastry thread as such, but if put the mixed pastry in a coverd bowl or plastic bag, in the fridge for about 30 mins before rolling, it should be easier to handle while you use it for whatever your making.

Just a quick tip to help you with this. Works with any type of pastry you using.

Iam, I'm always willing to share. The recipe is from one of my favorite cooking blogs.

Cinnamon Caramel Corn with Pecans & White Chocolate

12 C popped popcorn (about 1/2 C kernels)
1 C pecan halves, roughly chopped
1 C brown sugar
3/4 t cinnamon
1/4 C karo syrup (or honey makes a good substitution)
1 stick real butter (1/2 C)
1t vanilla
1/2 t baking soda

3 squares almond bark (about 4 oz)

*You can use air popped or microwave popcorn. If using microwave, anything works, but I prefer a "natural" flavor that's low in butter and salt.

Preheat oven to 250 degrees

Place popcorn and chopped pecans in a large bowl and set aside. Make sure to use larger bowls than what you think you might need to avoid accidents with the hot caramel mixture you will be adding in later.

Combine brown sugar and cinnamon in a 2 liter capacity microwave safe bowl. Mix well. Chop butter into chunks and place on top of sugar mixture. Pour corn syrup over the top of everything. Microwave on high for 30 seconds and then stir to combine. Return to microwave and heat for 2 minutes. Remove and stir and then microwave for 2 minutes more. *It should be slightly bubbly, you can microwave it a little more if you need to, but be careful not to over cook it and have it reach hard candy stage, it won't stick to the popcorn then.

Remove from microwave and add in vanilla and baking soda. Stir to combine. Mixture will foam and rise. Pour caramel mixture over popcorn and pecans and stir very well so everything is well coated. I like to stir it with a rubber scrapper/spatula, I sort of fold it in.

Spread popcorn mixture onto a foil-lined jelly roll pan/cookie sheet. Place in oven and bake for 30 minutes, stirring every 10 minutes. If mixture isn't crunchy enough for you, leave it in another 5 minutes or so.

Remove from oven and spread out on a large piece of parchment, waxed paper, or foil.

Melt almond bark according to package instructions. I usually melt it in the microwave, and then drizzle it over popcorn mixture with a fork. When almond bark is hardened and popcorn is cool, break into chunks and enjoy!

Not sure if there are these "pumpkin patches" in other areas of the states or in other countries. We all went to Pigeon Roost Farm yesterday. They have a big corn maze, hay ride and lots of things for the kids. I had an awesome time as did the rest of the family. It was great weather and thus just crazy busy. It was hard for my wife with all the noise, kids running around laughing/screaming/crying. But she went and that says a lot.

pigeonroostfarm.com if you'd like to see pictures of it. Going to these places hold such memories for me. OMG, we used to take our kids to one as they grew up. Also went with elementary school field trips and Girl Scout outings over the years. Such fun. I felt like a little kid yesterday, LOL.

I have not kept up with this thread really, has anyone said High school football games? I was a band nerd, LOL. So many Friday nights sitting in the stands, freezing and playing "Charge" on the trumpet. Lining up for the half time performance in Marching Band. Fall parades. Well college too, was in the Ohio University Marching Band too in the fall.

Wait until the last half of the clip, LOL

This clip is from way past my time there. I can still do the steps, just not for long.(pant, pant) I was there in '71 and '72. Really when this stuff was just started.

ISH, we have a bunch of those "pumpkin patches" around here too. Always fun. Took my boys when they were little and I take my granddaughter now. Although at 3 1/2 she isn't ready for the haunted house that one of them also offers. LOL!

Jawn

ISH, I was also in band in HS playing my trumpet at every football game. LOL I remember the cold nights when my mouthpiece would be freezing, also remember one time almost getting whacked in the head by a person in flags who wasn't watching where they were supposed to be in formation. Oh and the itchy wool/polyester uniforms and straps on the hats that were so annoying. It was cool when they would announce us as we marched onto the football field and then into the stands where we waited for our half time performance. I never played past HS, but it was a lot of fun for the most part.

Great tip Amthist ;o)

Thanks for the recipe Curiouser, I can't wait to try it!

Anni.....I think it is hilarious that you would be asking me for pie crust recipe....I really think I need to copy and paste your comments and send them to my mom!!!! Who would have ever thought?

Hey Jawn -did you hear that the Extreme Makeover rebuilt the dorm and haunted house at the school for the deaf??? I think I want to go this year. Trying to decided if my 10 yr old granddaughter is old enough. I think she could handle it ;o)

ISH - I am going on the pumkin patch field trip with my granddaugter's kindergarten class. That will bring back wonderful memories of my 3 son's class trips! BTW I loved your video...makes me tired just watching it though LOL!

When I am at home, I like doing many things.

Maybe the thing I like most is cooking.

Today I have bought fish and tomorrow I will prepare a plate with it.

And then I like eating what I cooked, obviously!!! :)

If I can go out, the things I like to do are too many, it's impossible to list all.

It IS impossible to list Dot! It actually kept me from clicking on this for days and days in the beginning, since I kept thinking of SO many things!!! Now I have one more because darn it- AM going to defeat pie crust once and for all!! I feel like Rocky running up those stairs in Philly-hee!

Iams, what photos in magazines of fall do not have one of pies with little leaves and things decorating them? I have been swearing at those for like an entire decade now, you know. Our local market now has bushel baskets of cooking apples for ridiculous prices so am going to DO this, and post it . Here's the potentially funny part, because I'll do it even if it becomes yet another patch-work quilt. Now I'm commited.

I loved the video! Football in all it's nuances is fall, and the band is all part and parcel. My Dad has an absolutely true story ( I know because he did not tell me to begin with, my grandmother did years ago) about his short, short stint in marching band. The school had noone for that big drum, whatever it's called-the one the kid straps on, is as big as the kid and he beats it with 2 big sticks? They blackmailed Dad into it somehow, stuck him into a parade and he was having such a blast booming that thing and marching along he didn't see that everyone else had stopped. Ran right over the trumpet player. He still looks hurt when he says they then asked him to leave the marching band.

It's a fall story which comes up frequently this time of year.
