What Kind Of "goals" Do People Set In A Typical Treatment Plan?

My goal is to apparently not have a goal. My therapist thinks I need to stop stressing myself and over thinking everything. I think that makes it worse for me --> stresses now about not having a goal.

With previous therapists it has been like: Reduce number of panic attacks, be able to speak about x without crying, talk as in the first person instead of 3rd when speaking about x event. Things like that :).

Not sure if that was helpful, but my 2 cents.

I chose small goals like go outside more often, read books for a certain amount of time (I had a hard time focusing until recently), exercise a few times a week.

I used to set goals such as going out in public without having a meltdown. I had a lot of trouble being in public places for a while.

My main large goal was to return to college. This could be work or anything similar.

Once I complete a goal, I try to think of another one to replace it.

Does the therapist give specific assignments that help you accomplish the goals? I made my own list of goals in planning for this appointment and I doubt they will be achieved quickly. I have been trying to accomplish some of them for 20 years! My husband refers to me as "the woman who hates everything." I am just now realizing why my view of the world wasn't all sunshine and roses.

I think it is just important for the therapist to know what you would like to get out of the sessions, it gives insight into where you feel you are, and your ideal of where you would like to be.

I imagine in your next session you will discuss each one, why they are issues for you now, how you can see yourself getting there etc. In my experience I wouldn't worry too much if they are the correct ones or if you will achieve them, you will get there in a time that suites you and they may change over time along with your perspective. I often a few sessions in forget I even set the goals in the first place, but I believe in CBT it is more centralised around your goals? ( I have never had it ).

All therapists handle things differently so I wouldn't worry too much and just see how it goes, easier said than done I know!

Goals.

You know? That's a damn good question. And one I haven't asked myself in a long time.

Build a new life.

Have a purpose // Become useful

Process all my old trauma, instead of shoving it in a box, like I did last time (becoming what dynamite does when shoved in a box, unstable & extremely dangerous; can be fine for years of rough handling, then glance at it wrong and bang).

Unf*ck myself. <<< To the fullest extent possible. Or desired.
