What a mess. He's hardly going to resolve this when he doesn't even have a job. So he can't refinance anyway. And the loan company or bank is going after anyone with pockets and that's you so far. Getting him to surrender is a good idea and your admonishment is really brilliant. (But will he be smart enough to follow your advice?)
If he doesn't, the only thing you can do is file BK or reach for a fair settlement with the bank. There are companies that specialize in that but again, a lawyer is probably the best source of help. And that's more money. BK can be recovered as long as you keep that job. It's a wait but if you are smart about knowing how to recover, you can come out all the better. After 10 years, the ding is removed. I have seen it happen. But getting a mortgage.....
