Really beginning to wonder what is going to go wrong next!
About 8 weeks ago, I fell over getting into a tow truck and landed heavily on my left hand fracturing the scaphoid bone in my wrist and dislocating my thumb causing a lot of muscular damage. One visit to the hospital later came away in a cast and sling having had my thumb put back into place which is a painful procedure at best of times much less when your wrist on that hand is fractured too.
Fast forward to this Saturday when X-ray determined that the fracture was healed, my cast removed and sent on my way with several layers of tubular bandage on my wrist to give it some support as I start using it again. Today at work noticed my thumb was very swollen, and swelling over the bandage and was hurting a lot. Showed it to my boss who is a qualified first aider. He had a good look at it and was fairly certain it had dislocated again, and promptly bandaged it up more to try and stop it moving, put it in a sling and took me to the hospital.
Afternoon was spent in a haze of a very strong painkiller shot followed by a sedative while my thumb was put back in place. Don't remember much of the process as too drugged! Now got my hand, thumb and forearm encased in some pretty heavy duty bandaging and in a raised sling with my hand virtually on my shoulder. Got to go back later this week when they will decide whether to put it in a cast or a removeable brace, can't do it now as too swollen hence all the bandaging. Got sling for week or two, strictly no using my hand. Feeling rather groggy from all the meds, bit sick and wobbly. Just waiting to be allowed to go home, hopefully not long now. Doctor said that whilst the fracture had healed, the tendons and ligaments of my thumb hadn't and they should either of left the cast on or put it in a brace until my thumb had healed more.
Really didn't need this. Feeling sorry for myself as was having a good day too!! Oh well, at least it gets me out of doing the washing up! Just really hate having it in a sling and feel very embarrassed and self conscious about it, hate seeing anyone that I know while got the sling on. Daft I know but it's really stressing me. Asked doc if it was really necessary and he told me yes in no uncertain terms as got to rest and immobilise it if I want it to heal. Guess I have got to do as I am told and try to hide from everyone.
