Threads about symptoms have really helped me accept my diagnosis. Also, reading others accounts have helped me not feel so alone in some of the weird stuff I've gone through in the past couple years. So my question today, as a trail of breadcrumbs for all trauma survivors, what is your weirdest symptom you or your doctor or caregiver have been able to attribute to your PTSD.
It can be something that is active or has long since subsided. But something that maybe doesn't show up in all the literature or is described as being experienced by only a small percentage of people with PTSD.
I'll start. For me, when I was burying all the trauma while it was still ongoing, my gums (which otherwise are quite healthy according to my dentist) were so apt to bleed it was crazy. My dentist had me coming in three four times a year just to keep an eye on them. She'd ask, "So tell me, are you under a lot of stress currently." And in my typical denial for those years I'd say, "Not any more than the typical New Yorker I think."
So yeah, that's mine: Bleeding gums. My doc has since confirmed that this can and does happen from time to time. Since then, my symptoms have become more classic (i.e. shakes, flashbacks, crying jags) and the gums have stopped bleeding. :thumbs-up
Okay, so what've you got or been through symptom-wise that's weird?
