Where is Your Favourite Place To Be?

I have a couple of places or situations i like to be. Places where i feel utterly free of this crap, where I feel at one with the world and feel happiness and joy with the world.

One is out in the hills of the peak district in derbyshire. A place where every outcrop of rocks has a name. Where there are signs of past inhabitants nigh on everywhere. All those feet that have trod where I leave my boot print. Where you can walk for miles without traffic and the people you meet bid you a good day and you feel in awe of the sight and the smell. I think about my kids and love to be up there with my best friends.
Its best either in winter when its freezing cold. there is no wind but the sun is out and you can feel the heat, just, like an omen of better things to come. When you shut your eyes and face then sun you see that red/orange glow of your own blood. All the world in view is a barren blasted heath. I know then why they had to invent gods to explain the majesty of its beauty.

The other place is very different. Thats down the front of a New Model Army gig, stripped to waist and dancing like a maniac! A great brothehood of like minded folk.

Here we are, all on the same rock. You have seen things I shall never see or feel or touch or smell.

So whats yours?

My favorite place to be, hmmm. Long Lake is beautiful. It's goverment land, accessible only by boat. There are 6 lakes that form a ring, all about 50-80 ft. deep, crystal clear and cold as hell even in the summer.

You can portage from one lake to the next, and once you get to the 3rd lake in, you're pretty much ALONE, and I do mean alone. The world as it was, and was meant to be. Loons calling back and forth every night from one lake to the next. Absolutely beautiful.

I've camped there with a girlfriend, and by myself. Loved it both ways.

The other would have to be St. Veronus. Great food, great beers from around the world. My favorite pub.

In my sailboat, working hard to get where I want to go in a strong wind. Moving fast...working hard to control the boat and get the most from the wind. A small mistake can be a hassle, a big one a disaster. It's one of the few times when I can get completely out of myself, not worry about how my head is doing. It is also exhausting, so when it is over I can sleep like a baby.

thats the thing!

what are the trees like round long lake? Any hills/mountains? How far from "civilisation"?

Can you see land Patrick? Is the sea blue or is it grey green and dangerous?

What a great thread idea!

My favorite place to be is the beach just feeling the wind, smelling the sea, hearing all the sounds of the surf, putting my bare feet in the sand, feeling the sun on my skin.

Second best is the woods walking a trail looking for animal sign, smelling the moist pine or wet moss. Being in the woods in the rain is even good. Hearing the rain hit the leaves on the way down.

An indoor place, I can easily get lost in a book store or library for hours! I literally get lost in all the discoveries in almost every section. When I retire I think I will dedicate a day a week to getting lost in either place.

Long Lake is in the Canadian Shield, so the lakes are all surrounded with cliffs, studded with pine trees clinging on to the smallest cracks. The water is so clean you can drink it, no kidding. The nearest town is about 1/2 hour away, but I swear, once you clear the cottages on the first lake in the chain, it could be 300 years ago. Pristine, beautiful wilderness.

Long Lake sounds like my kind of place.

My favourite place to be is Antalya, Turkey.
I have never seen anything to rival the beauty of that country.
I think for me, why I loved it so much is because it is just so peaceful. I had a completely worry free, and I mean completely worry free, two weeks there for my honeymoon in October.

I just felt so vibrant and happy there, like I didn't have a care in the world.

I know that it is just because I was on vacation, and as a newly wed to boot, but I have never felt that great in my life, and had not had a worry free day in the last 16 years...that it seemed like the perfect place.

A realistic favourite is at home snuggled up with my hubby. Watching a great movie and enjoying good wine.

Or, in a nice lavander scented bath with candles and great music. Doors locked to my demanding cats, and some time just to myself.

Also, in the forest, away from everyone with my own thoughts, and only the natural sounds of the day to keep me company.

When I get really stressed I like to "visit" a quiet, solitarty, warm and sunny beach. I like to lay in the sun and feel the warmth on my face, the breeze blowing gently across me and listen to the music of the water!

When I was in hospital a group therapy sessin was held where we were taught how to do this. It is best accomplished with a soft nature sound playing in the background.

There is a fair sized lake a good days hike into part of the Adirondack State Park. In the middle of the lake is a small island with part of it covered in tall pines and another part bare rock. I swam out caring my gear in front of me so it wouldn't get wet. I decided the island was my circle. I did two day, three night vision quest up there. I danced at night on the flatish rock part and labored as if giving birth under the stars, rested in a pineneedle filled hollow. I stayed hidden during the day listening to the sounds around me and letting my soul become quiet.

As the night stars faded on the last night, the brightest one was reflected in the water. It was making arcs and swirls, dancing as the small waves moved. I found my true name on that last dawn morning. It feels like that is the real untouched, unpolluted, original me. My part-native American side of my family never hurt me and never called my by the other side of the family's name for me.

All these answers are about quiet, peaceful places. I'm quite the opposite. My favorite place to go and let all the stress melt away is called the Offsets. It's about an hour and a half trip from where I'm from. I get a car load or two of my friends together and head out with our coolers and rafts. The Offsets was a mine. The miners hit a spring and now the entire thing is filled with water. It's seemingly bottomless and it's the perfect solution to scorching hot summer days! There are 70 ft cliffs to jump off! If you lay back and listen all you hear around you is music, laughter, and people having a great time. It brings a smile to my face and warmth to my heart... and usually at about that point, some1 decides to dump my raft into the water. =) What are friends for right?
