Even though getting your wisdom teeth out (all 4 on the 8th) is lower-end surgery, I've never been under anesthetic before.

So, what was it like when you got your wisdom teeth out? It's not like a scary white room with needles in my hand and whatever, yes or no?

It's a regular room. They will put an IV in. The initial poke hurts a tiny bit. They remove the hard needle, leaving behind a soft catheter. After the initial poke, it is painless. They will give you anxiety medication, and then the sedative. You'll quickly fall asleep, and the next thing you are aware of is waking up in recovery. You may feel dizzy, light headed, or nauseous when you first wake up, but all that will fade pretty quickly. For the first few days, take your pain meds on a schedule, even if you don't feel like you need them. If you let the pain get too intense, you could find yourself unable to get it back under control. Plan on eating soft foods and avoid drinking through a straw. Good luck with your procedure.

Yes to everything Shodakanjenn said. I had all four taken out when I was in my late teens. They were all impacted. But the dentist put me out totally. I smoked so I had a hard time healing. I had to go to the dentist every couple of days to get new clove-infused fabric thingies implanted into the new empty spaces. To this day I hate the taste of cloves. Never cook with them anymore. You'll be okay, Shamrock.

the big fear is not waking up (dead and gone). Also an IV in my hand... I just can't do it; I will throw up on anyone near me. Hand IV's creepy me the hell out!

When I was 16, my bp went so low I had to go to the ER. All my veins were collapsed. They tried for hours to get an IV in me because I needed glucose, my blood sugar was also really low. Why didn't they just give me some orange juice??? Finally, they got one into the back of my right hand. It was pretty unpleasant, but I know they needed to do it. And it was better than missing in my arm, which swelled up like a balloon. Ick -- there are mega fireworks going off on my street right now! Ick!! That's about as bad as getting an IV.

So I take it you've never had anesthesia before? I wouldn't worry. They're pretty safe. I've never heard of anyone dying from that.

You guys all got I.V.s? I only got a dose of valium and was wide awake for the whole thing. All 4 removed plus 4 baby teeth that I never had permanent teeth come in to replace them.

IVs can be placed anywhere there's a vein. Just tell them you don't want one in you're hand and they'll place it elsewhere. If seeing it placed is the issue, and turning away isn't an option, either the neck (impossible to see it being placed, or after placement, my last 2 surgical IVs were both in my neck, just the anesthesiologists preference), or placing it after you're asleep, and removing it before you wake up is an easy thing to do, just uncommon, because they usually push all the meds through the IV. Just talk with them ahead of time. Anesthesiologists rock :D

Also, you won't be able to vomit, as you won't have eaten anything 12-24 hours prior to the surgery ;)

2 less worries?

Most doctors now a days (at least here in New England) won't do the hand, as they realized how painful it was for people.
Everyone has pretty much summed out how it's going to go for you, but just rest assured the anesthesia they use for wisdom teeth pulling is a little bit different than what they use in major surgeries (I have the same fear of dying while under, so I have always asked etc).
The good news of getting all 4 pulled out at once, is that you wont have to go back in later to get more removed. Let them know your fears ahead of time, and they should really be able to ease your fears. I am such a baby with surgeries and I lay out my list of rules, and I actually tend to get a bit pampered.
You will do fine :) x

Oh, and yeah, they gave me codeine afterward. I was on it for about a month, until my sockets healed. Just really try not to smoke if you do or use a straw afterward, as that can pull out the clots that need to form in order to heal.

Bummer, Fade!
