You Know You're Obsessive Compulsive When...

When I really think about it, the OCPD reigns supreme with me when I am highly stressed and my bucket is full.
I go into a cleaning frenzy and end up having a go at everyone if things are not done right.
This is also when I find I am more irritated with other drivers on the road as they are not doing what I want.

And before anyone with a sense of humour cottons on, yes it is my SUDS bucket that is full most of the time. And not full of cleaning SUDS. I make myself laugh.

(Reviving an old thread...)

You know you're obsessive when...
  • you're waiting on your therapy appointment and you see a used coffee mug on the windowsill in the reception. You begin to think "Should I move that? I wonder why it's there.", and so begins a thought process that ultimately leads you into placing the cup on the receptionists desk as you remark that you couldn't help it, you just knew it wasn't mean to be there. You then go to back to sit and wait, when you notice the magazines and leaflets are so messy. You end up fixing them and making the place look neat.
  • you obsessively arrange (and sometimes rearrange) your food cupboards, fridge and freezer to make sure they're neat and in an order that makes sense to you
  • your partner says "Are you going to watch TV now that the room is in order and things are straight?"
  • doing all of the above actually makes you feel emotionally better, and sort of relieved.
I could go on. It's good to recognise it. I think everyone has certain ways they like things to be, and it's okay to be this way sometimes, right?

You arrange your computer files the way other people arrange food in their cupboard. To keep a list in the order you want, you call them 1 blah blah, 2 blah blah, 3 blah blah... and admire the neat columns of file names appearing before you. Until you get to 10 and realise that the double figures are going to be out of line with the single ones. So you go back and rename them 01 blah blah, 02 blah blah...

@Hashi , that is very practical and also made me giggle.

A person's messy desktop makes you break out in a cold sweat, and remark aloud that you couldn't cope or find anything with the icons everywhere like that. "How do you find anything in that haystack of a computer!?"

Not ocd, but I do have some quirks. At the grocery store I have to buy in even numbers if I am buying 2 or more. Can't buy 3 or 5. No reason for it, I just feel mildly uncomfortable if i don't. I have a few quirks when it comes to eating too. Not nearly as bad as when I was a kid.

When you spend hours every day organizing paperwork only to spend hours reorganizing them.

When you wipe the sink and counters in public restrooms
