Madhavi

New Here
Hello, am 35 yrs old woman who met with a car accident two days ago with my husband who is 37 yrs old.he was driving the car and it skid, hitting the tree. Air bag went up and since we had seat belts,we were saved. We both are unhurt..but i realised i have some after effects...

We both feel sleepy after that. I am constantly drifting into space filled with nothing. My rt arm aches and i got xray taken.. results awaiting. But emotionally.. sitting next to driver's seat is Making me nervous. Husband hardly talks about anything.i cry sometimes..i dont know why.
Are these.ptsd symptoms? How severe is my concern...should i seek help.

Thank-you in advance

Welcome, Madhavi. I definitely think it can't hurt to seek therapy and it might well help you. Take care, hon  if that's okay.

Thank you... But i dont know what i am thinking or feeling... How should i convince my husband to talk to me... Or even acknowledge something is not right..

Did you already have PTSD before the car crash?

If not, then you should know both that acute trauma symptoms are normal, and that there are steps you can take to increase your chances of full and total recovery.

If so, then no matter how well your disorder was managed before the crash, it would be a very good idea to get back into therapy, post haste to deal with new trauma as quickly as possible.

Hang in there, Madhavi. We will be here to support you. But do get into therapy. It can't hurt and might really help.

As for your husband, what happens if you try to talk to him about this?

Hi hodge.
he seems to be distracted...he looks tired and fatigued. He hugs me as if i need help. He has been occupying himself with insurance procedure and buying another vehicle ... Here isn't talking much about it at all.. am i supposed to worry.. For him?

He sounds like a really good guy. I don't know how to answer your question, except to say, get into therapy. And if he will go, too, sometimes, all the better. You guys have been through a traumatic experience and there's nothing wrong and lots of things right about getting into therapy after an event like this.

As others have said, if you've not had a previous PTSD diagnosis that's been reactivated what you're experiencing sounds like a very normal response to what's happened.

In the aftermath of something traumatic our minds and bodies respond by focussing their resources on essential functioning. So things like memory, motor skills, fine movement are all likely to be affected, you might keep seeing the accident in your mind, not remembering details etc and feeling anxious either when you're in the car or just generally.

You can help yourself by making time to rest and relax, treating yourself like you've had a big shock - so comfy blankets, hot drinks and crappy movies - whatever self care looks like. Doing exercise will help discharge some of your nervous energy and something like yoga can really help soothe your system.

You could also arrange to speak to a therapist if you need someone to talk to about it, especially if your husbands way of coping is to not want to talk about it. You could also write about your feelings in a journal or online blog to get them out of your head.

PTSD happens when the initial response doesn't settle or switch off - and that can take a few months so give yourself time.

Welcome.

I also advise seeking therapy.

Your husband was in the accident too, so it's good to get outside help as if he has after effects, you could end up dragging each other down and making each other worse.
