Name that distorted cognition (thought/perception)

The 10 primary cognitive distortions are:
  1. All or nothing thinking -- You see things in black and white categories. If your performance falls short of perfect, you see yourself as a total failure.
  2. Over-generalization -- You see a single negative event as a never-ending pattern of defeat.
  3. Mental filter -- You pick out a single negative detail and dwell on it so exclusively that your vision of all reality becomes darkened, like the drop of ink that colors the entire beaker of water.
  4. Disqualifying the positive -- You reject positive experiences by insisting they "don't count" for some reason or other. In this way you can maintain a negative belief that is contradicted by your everyday experiences.
  5. Jumping to conclusions -- You make a negative interpretation even though there are no definite facts that convincingly support your conclusion. (Involves mind-reading and fortune-telling.)
  6. Magnification and minimization -- You exaggerate the importance of things, or you inappropriately shrink things until they appear tiny.
  7. Emotional reasoning -- You assume that your emotions necessarily reflect the way things really are, as in "I feel it, therefore it must be true."
  8. Should statements -- You try to motivate yourself with "should" and "should not," as if you have to be whipped and punished before you could be expected to do anything.
  9. Labeling and mislabeling -- This is an extreme form of overgeneralization. Instead of describing your error, you attach a negative label to yourself.
  10. Personalization -- You see yourself as the cause of some negative external event which, in fact, you were not primarily responsible for.
Still with all or nothing thinking at times, a lot less of jumping to conclusions, I am doing magnification and minimization. I am doing a lot of should statements. I am doing a lot less emotional reasoning. I do the labeling and mislabeling as well. I am doing a lot less personalisation.

Overall my distorted cognitions are going down significantly! It has been really hard; but the effort has been well worth it.

Over generalization in a bad way about my future ( don't even try) Well. The facts say I have done well many times.
I have less personalization, too. Thanks, I am willing to allow others to take responsability about their lives and feelings and mistakes.
And last, I do not have to be perfect, even search for perfection. I can make wrong choices and also have some moody responses without being a BAD person!!
I don't have to search for perfection anymore, la la la...what a relieve!!!! And others don't expect it neither :sneaky:

Almost Friday. I have done lots of «doits» this week oriented towards sort and long self care terms. Also I have introduced fruit in my meals (I hardy ate any before) wich is an incredible achivement for me.
Much more aware of whats going on on my mind after doing the distorted thinking workout.
Lots of work in front, but it is some hope now

I can do it
They are just thoughts
I can change my distorted thinking and replacing it with some helpful thoughts.
I can do it
Patience, and be constant, Maria

Jumping into conclusions. Others' thoughts reading/guessing.
Personalizing, I am a bad person, its my fault. In a cultic group everything is your fault and, if some good outcomes, it is god's mercy

Improving solidly in all arenas attached to distorted, irrational thinking.

All or nothing thinking is still a real problem for me though. Improving graduallly.

All or nothing, perfectionism...spotted. Willing to make mistakes, lets see how I deal with. But Happy I have noticed it..
I am getting better on personalization, the world doesn't rule around me. I can rest.

Took these out for a jolly good ride yesterday. Particularly I exercised "Jumping to Conclusions", "Emotional Reasoning" and my old favourite "All or Nothing Thinking", I didn't binge eat or comfort eat. I took myself away from the situation. I did notice them before blowing up or being cranky with people. I am overall much improved. This isn't easy but I am sticking with it.

I am finding as time goes on I am understanding and seeing more of the top ten distorted cognitions in my thoughts, perceptions, actions, beliefs and ruminations. It will be interesting to see what other members notice about their distorted thoughts over time and how their understandings grow. I look forward to hearing what you all discover. I learn a lot from members on this forum.
