You nailed it talking about jobs at McDonalds. I still see people say that today on social media and it makes me so sad.
Southern California isn't but the central valley and the north valley are perfect for it. They are hella desolate places (You might be from No. Cal if.. ) without farming. Most of the population in California is all lumped together in the bay area and So. Cal. The water issue though...yeah that is a problem. Everything else spot on, and yes, it was about social security.
Those jobs have been leaving for longer than that and not just because they've gone over seas. I can't give you a date without looking up stuff that's hard to look up on my phone, but Reagan attacking the air traffic controllers union comes to mind as the obvious opening salvo. And the reason? Because unions give us peons some bargaining power. They are a move to level the playing field. Are they perfect? No. But I'd bet the decline in union membership and the decline in real wages align fairly neatly.
That's one of the places I think our system had run off the rails. Companies exist to provide goods and services. They earn money seeking what they produce. The money they earn gets reinvested in the company and paid to labor. 'Stockholders' should be a very small part of the picture, if they're in the picture st all. A stockholder should be sometime like you're uncle Joe who wants to invest in your business because he believe you and wants you have a chance. Add it is, our system has morphed into something where the stockholders matter more than anything else. They don't produce anything. They gamble for a living. Our corporate taxes might be too high, but we've got to, somehow, move away from this system where the stockholders are the most important people the room.
