The problem is that we have so many stressors in our life, both good and bad ones, that it only takes just one more trivial one sometimes to send us over the edge, hence the PTSD cup explanation in the articles. As Daniel has mentioned before too, there are different levels of PTSD, i.e. acute, severe, and some veterans can be given the therapy needed to allow them to continue service. The key is to remove those unwanted stressors that trigger the flashbacks and nightmares. Its sometimes not that easy though.
A common stressor can be people in uniform, noises in general, crowds, military aircraft and vehicles, anything that reminds us of when we were over there.
Realistically we should systematically go through our life and remove as many of those stressors as possible so we can manage a close to normal life, hence veterans moving to the boonies to isolate from society.
