Today I had my first med exam for my SS disability. My main issues are PTSD GAD and Depression however, I do have some back issues. The Medical exam was very basic but the doc asked me the question "Do you want to work." I was not sure of a good answer and felt like any answer would be wrong. Has anyone else experienced this and is there a correct answer?

The best answer to give is the answer you feel is the most honest.

Well to be honest if you ask anyone most will say they don't want to work but have to. Most with a disability want to work. I am fighting for SSDI rigjt now and working would give me more income than SSDI ever would. Even if I win my case, I want to continue treatment and get to a point to get back out working. I habe goals and dreams and SSDI was never apart of them.

I understand. I want to work. Those are good goals. SSDI has a program where you can have a trial of work for 11 months. The months don't have to be consecutive. You don't get your SSDI while you work, but you are still in the system, so you can go back to SSDI if it doesn't work out. I have been wanting to do this but I have just about reached early retirement age, so combined with the fact I can't handle the stress of work it doesn't make sense to me. I don't think SSDI is a part of anyone's goals and dreams. I know the general public thinks many people on it are lazy and could work, but that simply isn't true. I never had to have an appointment, since I had a many hospitalizations over 2 years, suicide attempts and lots of paperwork describing it. I hope you get on it and never give up on your dreams.

I am in your same boat, but I am 31. I just can't accept that I won't ever again. I want to work, bit I also need to get better. In your case I think a good answer for the docs question would be I would love to work, but my illness and symptoms keep me from being able to do that.

I just found out today I was APPROVED for SSDI. I am both happy and sad. I feel like a waste of space.

I think he was checking to see if you were "trying it on" as back injury is used by many "chancers" who just want a sick note or get into disability benefits.

I was asked the same question years ago, after I had been inviluded out of the ambulance service, and that was sixteen years ago.

In fact, I'm presently fighting to get my benefits back, after they were stopped, when I had to re-apply for them with this new PIP system, the government has introduced?

My back issues is the least of my concern and is not my chief complaint it’s the mental issues that I applied for and the back issue came up in the exam.

I filed July 2017. I was sent to a mental CE Sept. 28th and was approved Oct 2nd. This was all on an initial application. I have spotty treatment but have been in and out of treatment since I was 14 and I'm now 31.
