My service dog had a completely clear xray, a clean bill of health, and the ok to continue working both for PTSD and mobility support! Big sigh of relief! It's so much more then just a dog or a pet and a huge investment. 4 grand in and still going. This was the best news I've had in a long time and such a load of worry off of my shoulders!

@Zoogal, program dogs can go for 25 grand. It really isn't cheaper (or by much) to owner train. It is still A HUGE investment that is devistating to loose. I have always been prepared to loose it and start over as that is a risk of owner training but still would be a big loss for sure.

And yes, the fakes just have no idea the amount of money, time, and energy it takes to properly train a service dog. I spend every spare minute training and don't even have time to even watch tv anymore. On his days off I am researching training. It is all I do. Work, come home, train/research training, go to bed, wake up and do it all over again. It is very hard and very physical. I prepared myself before hand and did a shit ton of research before starting to make sure I was in the proper place to take this on but yes, most do not realize just what it takes to properly train a service dog. And it takes this amount of time, energy, and money for 2 to 3 yrs and then "up keep" training for the remainder of the dog's life. Service dogs are in training for life as you have to up keep on those skills. It is truely a way of life.

I feel you! I'm in the process of getting on a waitlist for a new dog as mine approaches her 8th birthday. Going pretty well, I'd say! Because I'm optimistic :P
