News Vet and service dog asked to leave restaurant

Although I have cPTSD I am not particularly sympathetic about dogs or other service or 'comfort' animals especially in situations where food is involved. This for me is a severe trigger. I'm glad that there are accommodations made for people with our disability, however, I think the 'other people' have rights as well and we need to be considerate of them. If you bring your dog into a restaurant or supermarket I'm in, I'm going to have to leave. No dogs or other animals where food is involved as far as I'm concerned, sorry.

I agree when it comes to emotional support animals.

Obviously service dogs are very different, but I'm afraid of dogs in general (except for my service dog) so I know what you're saying.

A service dog won't approach you though, so that's awesome :)

They will if they have a slacker owner!

There’s a local vet who has a service dog that’s always off lead, will approach people. Nobody says boo cuz the guy is like 6’6 and 300 pounds.

He gives a bad impression of service dogs!

We do. It's called very high standards of grooming and most of those that actually need service animals take that very, very, seriously. It takes me hours to groom one of the shortest hair breeds around. Most will also cut the hair of a longer haired breed whether that's using clippers to keep a poodle at a puppy cut or whether that's using scissors and thinning sheers on a Golden Retriver. Most of us make sure, as much as possible, that our dogs are clean and not sheding. I have baby wipes in the car for his feet even. We are still bringing a dog around food and if it wasn't necessary we wouldn't. We need our dogs to function and just like you may not like a dog around food, I still should be able to go out and get groceries. Without my dog I cannot do that. Heck, I am struggling doing that very thing even with my dog and am looking for delivery of groceries. But should we all be forced to go the delivery route? Why? Can we not come to a middle ground?

But going back to the grocery store and restraunt. I set aside hours a week to grooming and then hours ahead of going out to do some more grooming right before we go somewhere that there's food. So, that's the answer. We keep our dogs well groomed and those that actually need a dog to function take that super seriously. Or, at least I do.

@lostforgottensoul one of the reasons I don't have a service dog is I couldn't be consistent with that level of care. I am exhausted just thinking of two hours of grooming.

I'm very thankful for the therapy animal housing laws, but I too struggle with dogs in the grocery store. I have mentioned before the time I saw a woman set her dog on a fruit display and the dog lifted it's leg and peed all over the fruit. The store said they couldn't do anything about it. Wash you fruit people.

You can spot a real service dog by it's behavior. But they were to afraid to say anything.
