News Rape and politics, how do you think about this?

@somerandomguy , I generally agree with you, which is one reason I basically don't like capital punishment.

Personally, and I'll admit I have my prejudices, I think sex crimes are in a different category. No one NEEDS to rape someone, for any excuse. Poor up bringing, lack of resources, whatever, no excuse. A person who feels so entitled that they believe they have the right to treat another human being that way just because they want to? I don't think you can rehabilitate someone like that. They'll be sorry they got caught, but I'd bet it's pretty rare they're sorry for their actions. (I'm not saying all offences are equal. You don't have to kill them all....)

Some of these criminals can absolutely be rehabilitated. Some can't. Ideally, we'd be able to evaluate them, be able to tell the difference, and treat accordingly.

Overhauling sex crime statutes would also help. Right now in many jurisdictions, we treat a 15-year-old boy who sexts a 15-year-old girl the same way we treat a serial rapist. They might either both get a slap on the wrist, or they might both go to prison for a long time. That's the law, but it's not justice.

Rape and politics.
Civil rights connects rape and politics.

You know, I just don’t equate this t most of my none consensual experience. I do relate to the power issue, but I did not feel the victim of ’hate crime’ . I think that a LOT of the time people are just greedy. I absolutely believe that my perp liked me ( apparently they were upset I stopped talking to them and were confused about it).

I even wonder if this idea invalidates those of us who were in less violent rapes, assault by deception, non informed consent. And those supposed grey area rapes. The perps don’t feel it wasabpit power I think. They just want yl get off. Sometimes they wrap it up in bows of love.

Roger that,

He wasn't on FB when I logged on so sadly I'll have to wait to get his opinion unless we have some Scandinavian group members here who'd like to weigh in??? I just don't think the opinion of someone who doesn't stand under that umbrella is necessarily 100% accurate as they have no 1st hand experience with the subject matter. That doesn't mean their opinion isn't valid or their opinion is wrong; it doesn't mean my opinion is right... I'm simply saying someone who actually sees how this system works could give a much more accurate account to how it works. From my experience nothing is perfect. There are pros and cons to everything. It's easy to stand back and challenge me on a subject I know nothing about because I don't have any insight to present a counter opinion. However I know my friend to be objective and honest and will weigh in on both the pros and cons to a political topic (that's why I would like to get his opinion) However I will paraphrase and summarize his answer to keep it in my own words.

Better still might be looking at the actual stats ;) the imperfect Wikipedia has some certainly.

I have not checked recently but I THINK reporting rate in Scandinavia is higher?

sorry... had to go grocery shopping, but I'm checking out the website now...
Hahaha, how dare you live ;)

I was actually suggesting different stats. I just read on Swedish ones over reporting and it's different to how I remember : things are reported more but also each rape is counted once: so if a husband rapes his wife every day for a month it's thirty different rapes. Lots of places it's just one rape

Also counter this with some places having NO crime of rape only sexual assault now. Figures can be difficult.

I haven’t read about convictions yet.... I’m particularly flighty and triggered today ; my concentration goes

The most profound group of stats to me was this...

out of every 1000 rapes only 310 get reported
57 of those lead to arrests (I refuse to believe this is because cops aren't doing their jobs)
11 of those actually make it to a court room
7 of those lead to a conviction (so if it does make it to court there is a good chance there will be a conviction stacking up evidence is the hard part)
6 of those will be put in the prison system

I think the problem starts with reporting... that DNA test is the first step in building a case but so many victims don't get it done
this would lead to more arrests and more evidence would bring more cases to a court room. This would be a domino effect. I can't fathom 70% of rapes go unreported...

It's s common misconception that DNA is the issue ( though.there us s horrendous backlog of rape kits in the States)

In most rapes the rapist and victim know each other, sex is often admitted by the rapist: the defence used is simple : It was consensual. One person word against the other. THIS is the real problem in most cases
