Euthanizing service dog. Bad, bad day.

Thank you all so much! I feel a lot better and she is doing well. Her bed is near the chicken hospital, and I have a chicken with a broken pelvis in there. I forgot to lock the door, and she barked quietly until I came back. She is a service dog even in retirement.

I once had a dog who suddenly lost the ability to walk... and somehow I figured out it was myasthenia gravis... I read that if they gave the dog a certain drug and it could walk, it confirmed it. The vets kept telling me it couldn't be... It took forever to convince the vet to try it... He gave her the shot, and she got up and walked... We were all stunned... She took the pills for a while, then it never came back. She lived another 6 years... and walked right up til the end.

I know it probably has nothing to do with what happened to your dog, but I thought I'd share it with you...

There are no guarantees that your dog won't have another seizure, but it's possible it won't happen again... I'm really sorry you're going through it... You have enough to deal with...

I just had to put my retired Service Dog down about 4 months ago (on my birthday). He was old, sick, and in pain. He was also a #120 pound animal. He told us it was time that day, and I knew it needed to happen while he could still walk into the vet's office on his own. He almost couldn't do it. The good news is he died peacefully in my arms. I will never forget the huge sigh of relief he let out when they gave him the first injection. It was definitely his time. Doesn't change the fact that it still hurt me like hell. I'm still grieving his loss.

I'm glad you have some extra time with your dog. Cherish those moments. They'll let you know when its time.

I hope you get through this rough patch soon. Those suck.

Thank you, it made me cheer up a lot, that she will live longer. My vet thought my 2 mastiffs were about 6 years old when they were 10, and she said she's seen mastiffs live to be 14. I'm hoping that's the case with my girls.

I'm so sorry. It is so hard to lose a good, supportive friend who loves you unconditionally. I always used to keep cats because of living in apts, but when I bought my house, I got my two girls, the last of a litter of 12, and I got one 1/2 price, and the other they gave me free since she was the last one. I called him several years later to thank him again, and tell him I had trained one as a service dog. I think next lifetime she will be human.
