News Worldwide impact of the novel coronavirus (covid-19)

The news reader remarked that "you can't do THAT with digital media."
Very good observation. I would add that toilet paper might be useful after viewing digital media, but you get into that whole touching of the eyes and face thing.
We were discussing the whole TP thing at work (bunch of guys, 30- 60, I will edit) and it was pointed out that it is early spring and the naturally occurring toilet paper available in the woods is young and tender and abundant, It would be worse if it was late fall and it was all dried and crumbly. We will get by, somehow, guaranteed.

@blackemerald1 - Friday has a point about indoor pool air quality to a degree. But a good amount of things I found troubling. Please do not avoid soap showers before and after using a commercial pool. Usually it is a county Health Department rule and though one that people commonly ignore is in place for a reason. I was gonna go into it more but it would be way off topic. Super short version: What the odor is indoor pools (not chlorine... total dissolved solids airborne aerosol from water features and swimmers and also the chem reaction from alcohol based products (perfumes, hair sprays, etc.) with chlorine products. (Similar to but not as dire as the chem reaction between ammonia products and chlorine bleach.) Alcohol molecules and chlorine molecules cause a reaction that is irritating to eyes & noses even if you're just sitting in the pool area.) Chlorine burns up when it hits organic matter or it bonds with inorganic matter. Inorganic matter is total dissolved solids. The only way to get those out are by water exchanges based on usage. Basically the indoor air quality is only as good as the pool operator and the people using it and the ventilation. Chlorine is actually odorless and for public use, scent is added.... kinda like how scent is added to natural gas for safety. That's the way short version but it really would have been way way off topic and long.

Anyways... Santa Rosa county FL has a case too (not far from MIL as she's on the county line).

Sams Club pretty civilized yesterday. A bit busier and some of the products we usually use out of stock. But reasonably stocked and everyone was civilized. One thing about being around/near Lex... people are so polite to each other. We like that.

Read this morning that Italy is getting hit really hard, and taking measures that may effect up to 16 million people.

Basically I'm still on the fence unless or until some more statistics become available. There's just too much to weed through and try to discern/ascertain the real state of things with this virus.

RE: Tea tree oil... I use it a couple of ways but never on my skin directly unless it is diluted properly. You can though put a few drops on a Kleenex or paper towel and wave it under your nose... and I use it in a diffuser (just let it evaporate) when symptomatic for seasonal allergies. It is though an antiviral, antibacterial and antifungal.

^Hmm.. I don't know why I ever took up swimming now that you've told me about all of that awful stuff that can beat the chlorine. So..thanks.. I think.. lol..
Because it’s fun :sneaky:

Also infinitely cleaner than a gym ...or an elementary school, or back of a taxi, or any sort of public transport for that matter, or most elevators (although I suppose that falls under ph kid transport? Kind of?)..., or or or :p List goes on.

Immune systems are badass marvels to be reveled in. They’re under constant siege. An outdoor pool is going to have some of the lowest microbial load of... anywhere people go.

@The Albatross ...You may notice I didn’t say skip showering, I said skip the locker room & shower at home.

I dunno...
You ever try wiping your butt with a pinecone? It's not pleasant any time of year. God help you if you have haemorrhoids. ?
I’ll MEET your pine cones, and raise you... stinging nettles :smug:

Stupid things to wipe your ass with... sounds like a helluva good poker game! :sneaky: Who needs chips, anyway?

I am currently on antibiotics for an ear infection. I have had fevers and some coughing, but thankfully no shortness of breath. Still, when I read about the mild cases, I wonder... I have underlying health issues too, (Lyme disease) so I must admit I am scared. No panic attacks though, thankfully.

I agree Tea Tree oil is a great product and it's got lots of beneficial properties and applications but don't agree with rubbing it under your nose, neat. ugh.. What do you dilute it with? I've only ever used it full strength.
When I was in the tropics I put it on my toenails morning and night. I'm sure that's why I didn't have tropic toenails. ugh...

I think some sort of vapour rub would be safer than rubbing tea tree oil under your nose anyway.

Regarding toilet paper. There is no Australian shortage. We make it here in factories. There are millions of rolls waiting to be dispatched just as fast as the trucks can load. We've created our own problem by panic buying it. Eventually the shops will catch up. LOL We don't have to resort to rummaging the forest floors.

Indonesia is experiencing panic buying for spices and herbs. A rumour circulated that certain products in that area can kill off the virus. lol..

A shipment of hand sanitizer destined for China was stopped by customs a few days ago. Somebody had bought several thousand bottles of it, the little ones, packed it all together and tried to pass it off as luggage. The airline was unhappy because there is alcohol in hand sanitizer and it needs to be packed appropriately for planes. It wasn't. So that would have been several supermarkets, at least, cleaned out of their hand sanitizer.

The psychology behind panic buying is really very interesting. I'm sure someone here will have a better explanation than I have but it seems to be relatively simple? Humans mimic each other. Bit like herds on the African savanna. One bird, zebra or gazelle spooks and a stampede begins? FOMO? or being caught out? Survival? But how that equates to toilet paper is interesting.

I get uneasy when I go to the grocery store and shelves are bare but I'm consciously resisting the temptation to buy anything apart from normal things and in normal amounts. But I also know that I've got a small supply of food & stuff because if I have a bad day, week, month with ptsd I cannot go to the stores.

Oh and I'm now growing my own Parsley. lol.

Masks are recommended for people who have been diagnosed with the virus and are self isolating, or those who are caring for a person with the virus.

Wearing masks around in other situations is a waste of masks. Suppliers are having a hard time meeting the requirements of front line medical staff. People buying masks unnecessarily is making that situation worse.

When buying for the virus, try and stay level-headed about what you're buying and why. If you don't need masks? Leave them for the people that do.

If you don't need 8 months of toilet paper right now? Leave supplies available for people living on the breadline, who can only afford to buy what they absolutely need each week.

ETA And for pete's sake, don't get your information about the virus and necessary precautions from social media like YouTube!

Panic causes more panic which leads to irrational decision-making and craziness......yup!

I can personally attest to Tea Tree’s antiviral properties, but god only knows if it would have any effect on this virus. Put it under your nose? I think you’d want to puke after 5 minutes due to the smell! I like the smell, it’s just VERY powerful.

I went to Bath & Body Works to get hand sanitizer. There was a limit of 10 per transaction, but I was assured I could do multiple transactions. I told them I was good with one transaction. ? I’m a hand sanitizer nut. It goes on carts, baskets, etc that I use. I’ve never seen anyone else do this, lol. I usually just do it in the winter, but this year my habit will continue into spring/summer. Who knows if it makes much of a difference, but it makes me feel better.

I’m getting into the habit of wearing my lightweight scarves so I can avoid touching my face while in public. I’m notorious for always touching my face, especially rubbing my eyes. This is why I can’t wear mascara. :-/

@blackemerald1 - Carrier oils - I use coconut oil as a carrier oil. Heres's a vid.

Eucalyptus is also a handy dandy one to keep around it's antibacterial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory and immune support properties.

@Friday - One of the main member complaints was "too much chlorine" - on investigations, none of the members were showering or rinsing after pool use before leaving the facility. Common errors are staying in wet bathing suits and not showering with soap or just rinsing off, and in 3 of the 5 pools & 2 Jacuzzi's which used a solid/tablet sanitizer (trichlor or bromine) - the residual left on the skin was an irritant for people with sensitive skin. One guy triggered off a health department complaint and even they were mystified... until the guy told them that he skipped showering or rinsing before dressing and then rode his motorcycle to get to work (it was an eye complaint). But that concludes the pool stuff.

3 more cases in KY over the weekend... bringing total to 4 that we know of so far, the CDC sites won't be updated til later today (they update Mon-Fri).
