My issue is my hips. I walk fine most of the time but I cannot stand in one place for more than a minute or two before I have to start repositioning myself.

I use coccyx cushions at my desk and in the car to keep pressure off of it.
Hello @RussellSue!!! ☺️ I am Lionheart but my friends call me lion.

Reply: I too do the same with my hips, I used to not be able to stand in line for any length of time due to increasing pain which forced me to sit down.

Now I have a diagnosis of spinal stenosis which adds to my back pain and pain upon walking. I need an MRI to confirm the diagnosis and probably onto back surgery afterwards depending on what the MRI tells the doctors.

Also, what is this cushion you speak of? It sounds like something I may need. I get a lot of pain in that area of my spine as if it is bruised from pressure against it. When I sit still, shift my weight, or raise up from the chair, it causes pain.

Anyway, that's all (fibro sux).

My issue is my hips. I walk fine most of the time - not even limping much, anymore, but I cannot stand in one place for more than a minute or two before I have to start repositioning myself. I used to own a wheelchair but found it difficult to move around in a small kitchen and it was too short for me to do much work, especially dishes. I had some issues with small doorways, too.

I have not actually had the opportunity to sit on a saddle stool but the shape makes me concerned about my tilted tailbone. I can't use a regular bike seat because I get blisters and I use coccyx cushions at my desk and in the car to keep pressure off of it. Every saddle stool I have looked at looks like there would be pressure right where I don't need it. Though, I think the rings they often have at the bottom could be a very helpful place rest the feet when not moving around. Mine does not have a ring like that. I rest my feet on the legs but I think the options a ring at the bottom would give might make it more comfortable since I am pretty limited on where I can put my feet. This stool also has a back which I do appreciate because it helps keep my cushion from falling off and I can lean back on it if I get tired.

My motto is, if you think it will help, buy it! Life is too short to feel too limited in what you can do, especially if some relatively inexpensive item can improve your situation. It sounds like you are probably on the right track with this stool idea to me.

Best of luck!
I have a tilted tailbone too - but spent many years in a saddle so I know I can adjust for that ( or could? ) .

and yes - I am leaning towards getting it .

since I asked here I received a letter from the physio therapy dept of the local hospital for a telephone call in early December so I have decided to wait and ask their opinion.

I have been painting some bird houses today and it’s SO frustrating. Four houses. My third session of painting and still not done. Today I did two roovez before my arm was burning as if I had a lactic Acid build up from serious hard work . From holding an artist’s paintbrush . 🙄. It is not possible - imo- to not feel self frustration at the least on days like this. My DH said ‘ I’m so proud of you for achieving to day - it would have been so easy not to do any painting - but you did, and the dogs out.’ I think ‘ I’m in my fourties - Other women my age can run marathons - or at least do a full days work - or keep house normally. Makes it tough to go ‘yay, I painted a bird house roof ‘

Hello @Lionheart . I recognize you. You are the friend of the caterpillars or at least they let you take their beautiful portraits. ☺️

I just use a run-of-the-mill orthopedic coccyx cushion. I bought mine on Amazon but I know Wal-Mart and lots of other places carry them. The most important aspect of mine is that there actually is no cushion where the tailbone would normally sit on a cushion. It is a memory foam seat cushion with a groove or notch removed in the tailbone area - many others just have holes where the tailbone goes. Not having that pressure equals a lot of relief for me mostly because my skin breaks down from it. I think it started to become a real problem when I injured myself last year because I started sitting a lot more often. Up to that point, I only had issues with it once in a great while.

Oh no! That sounds awful.
I have a complicated mess of things going on but nothing that's going to require surgery any time soon or at least that's what I hope. I am not a fan of surgery. I took a break from PT for a few months and now I am back at it hoping to make some life/awareness changes that will help lower my pain level. It gets discouraging. I imagine it does for you, too. I am sorry.

I am glad to hear that. I find the wheeled stool I use very helpful at times.

That sounds like a good idea.

I know. I am sorry.

I am 40 and my big sister was recently training for Spartan races. I can't say I wasn't a little jealous hobbling around with my cane over here. I had a good period here recently where I was able to do a lot but the last 3 weeks or so have been rough.
Is the trouble you are having holding the paintbrush from fibro?

@RussellSue Thank you for the information. I slipped off the top of the porch (ice) when I was a young boy and cracked my tailbone on the edge of the bottom step. I never saw a doctor about it but it causes me a lot of pain when it flares. So I am most likely gonna invest in one.

Yeah, spinal stenosis is a narrowing of the spinal column that results in pain when walking. Frustrating because I am going on 60 years old and I am not ready to give up the ability to walk to the store if I choose to. Back surgery may be in my not too distant future. The doctor said that it is either that or regular injections into my spine. Anyway thanks for recognizing that it gets discouraging at times.

The possibility of surgery is always scary.

Last year, a doctor told me I would be a candidate for having both hips replaced but that I was too young. She also said I couldn't have any more minor surgeries on my hips because of my arthritis. That included repairing the labral tears I am still recovering from.

This year, a new doc says that's rubbish and I will likely be a candidate for impingement surgery long before any total hip replacements. I don't know what to think, anymore, so I just do what the PT says and hope for the best.

Since I am hypermobile, hip replacement is risky, so I plan to drag this out as long as I can. For about 3 of the 9 months when the labral tears were really painful, however, I was thinking a lot about surgery.

Ouch!
Yeah, I think a cushion would be a worthwhile investment.

It's horrible how things like that never go away. I have nerve damage in my right elbow from when I fell off my bunk bed on the first day of spring break when I was 8 years old. I was so excited that I would get to stay in bed and listen to music that I overreached for my boom box and crashed to the ground, fracturing my elbow.

I hope the cushion helps!

Wow, that is terrible about your hip, whichever way things go, I wish you healing and comfort. I have age-related osteoporosis and osteoarthritis and fibro. Omg, I am making myself sick thinking about it all. hee hee Thanks for telling me about the cushion I have one set to order.

it was in my arm from raising my arm to paint. I’m glad I have the kind of hair that doesn’t get brushed or combed daily - lifting my arms can be exhausting. Some days I feel like I can barely lift a drinking glass or cup - but with the painting / though it was not at high level and I was seated - it was just that- I guess - I did not rest enough in between brush strokes or something 😂😳. I feel a little less sorry for myself today

Heated socks! Best thing EVER!
Just discovered them and can't believe how well they work - even when I'm not in the cold.
Its like they make my whole body feel better

I've been using hot packs for years on my feet and hands but this is even better

so my tights/smallsock/regularssock/sweatsock/boot sock combo isn't necessary anymore? Hmm. I have my doubts.
Ha ha. Glad you found something!
Do you get cold even when it's warm out?

Exactly! I can retire all that and my hot packs!

I'm cold if I have a flare coming even when the weather isn't cold. It's one of my indicators. I'm better than the weather channel at predicting storms 🥴

My Grandad had Crest syndrome which includes Reynauds (spellcheck). He installed a hand-drier in his laundry, like one you'd see in a shopping centre bathroom! The things we do!!
