It's my understanding a lot of adults find out they have it after their child gets diagnosed (they recognize they are ticking all the boxes, as is their child). Awareness of ourselves is lower with ADD and has to be learned, in a way.
Yes trauma in childhood can be confused with ADHD and there is symptom overlap. You can also have both ADHD and PTSD also. There is literature that explains how to discriminate one from the other.
Oddly, saw the 1st interview ever of Robin Williams on Carson; he was very hyper and was telling everyone about his anxiety, but I think most thought he was joking because he was so funny and so fast-minded (and bodied). It was confirmed he had a very severe casse of Lewy-body dementia after his death, which my aunt aquired at the end of her life but is associated with a higher risk with ADD. (She had severe ADHD but they did nothing but diagnose you in those days. And was also physically still hyper as a woman, even as a senior, which is more rare in adults and especially women so they say.)
They are proposing to rename it VAST- Variable Attention Stimulus Trait, I think, because they say it's the worst named thing ever. It involves an abundance of attention versus a lack of it... Hence, "SQUIRREL!!!"
