Work not-ever-valued

I am a contractor working as a proofreader for a global medical company. Been there for 4 years, but I've been proofing and editing in the medical field for 20+ years, and I have a nursing and a master's degree in writing. I work remotely for medical reasons, but I do attend special events and workshops occasionally.

The person I work with has been promoted, so they need a new proofreader. I was told I could apply and would likely be the top candidate--this job requires knowing a lot about the company and how things work, as well as the proofreading part, and it takes a long time to learn all the company quirks, so... Problem is, I have to be remote. And the director said they want the person in this position to work onsite 3x weekly.

Ok, so f*ck that.

The job was posted, and I got a copy of it today (it's been posted 10 days, so I guess they'd rather I not apply anyway). The bottom of the pay range is nearly $40,000 more than I make. Of the requirements, the applicant needs to have 4 years of work experience (of any sort) and a bachelor's. I have 20+ in THIS field (with 4 at this company) and a master's.

I'm seriously pissed off, but worse, I'm really depressed (like more than usual). Feels like my work is not valued and they are discounting my physical issues/needs.

I so want to quit.

Things can often be negotiated. Apply and negotiate the working conditions if you get the job?

Feeling valued is a massive thing. Prior to this job coming up, did you feel valued?

I don't know what country you are in , but with your medical condition are the employers legally obligated to make reasonable adjustments to enable you to do the job?

Nope. We talked about it before it was even posted, and I was told the ONLY way I would even be considered was if I agreed to work onsite. And...they didn't post it in a place I could actually see it or apply to it. I only saw the post (10 days after it was posted) because the woman I worked with showed me.

I’m sorry.

It’s draining working somewhere where you aren’t treated with respect or valued.

Then present yourself as an outstanding candidate… with conditions.

The McJobPosting, written up by some intern to be approved by their boss running to the bathroom, elevator, coffee cart, home… is just that. The position? Is available. Nearly every point of which? Will. Be. Negotiable. By someone with real standing. (Not the pee-on who wrote it).

If you want to be a REALLY STRONG CANDIDATE? Ask for even more money, and better benefits, and continuing to be working remotely. Tell them you’re willing to budge on a few items, but not the remote work. Of course they’d require onsite blah blah blah with a new hire, but as they’d be promoting in house with you? They know your credit is good. No reason to add babysitting to someone else’s calendar. Also, of course, you would be onsite for necessary meetings with people who matter. (This is the ask yourself it’s it’s worth the hassle of 1 day a week, or 1 day a month, for 50k per year? Yes. They’re advertising 40k. Ask for more. Negotiate downward).

And, duh. Of COURSE you. are. not. important. or. valued. by the high school or college student typing up the minimally required by law notice of posting. They have no idea who you are. They’re 15. Or 20. Trying to get a foot in the door doing BS grunt work. All terrified about getting it wrong, or vexed that they’re being brought so low to do such form letter bullshit & just want it done & approved. The wording of the posting? Is. About. The. Minimum. Required. By. Law. Of course you’re better than THAT! It would be insulting not to be.

This isn’t a performance review by someone who knows either you, your work, or both. This is a McJobPosting, as required by law.

Actually, this company doesn't work that way. The "peon" who wrote it is the director of the department. And it's not negotiable. They've told me that.

See above. She's a bitch, but she is over a 50-person department and she consulted the person she's replacing.
