Any Helpful Medications?

Has anyone mentioned melatonin for sleep? It's a natural hormone your body makes and they sell it over the couture for sleep.

Other then that...I don't take anything for depression because I can't. So I don't have advice there. All of them have just torn me apart and took me weeks to recover, can't take them at all.

*I am talking Celexa 40 mg. with great success as well as low-dose Abilify for irritability/aggression. I also take Prazosin for PTSD nightmares and Ativan for anxiety.

However, I was on 900 mg. dose of a Wellbutrin / Serzone combination for years and it seemed to work too.

* (I am disabled with PTSD and suffer severe clinical depression).

Hope this is helpful,
LH

Yes melatonin is one of those things that is often absent in ourselves. I recommend the 3mg dose before bed but they do come in 5mg doses as well. There are liquid preparations, but are often suspended in an alcohol solution. A combination of valerian root and melatonin is considered safe among those who know but can also be potent and capable of keeping somebody asleep for a full 12 hours for some people. A preparation is also sold over the counter at pharmacies called 'Alteril', which is a combination of melatonin and valerian.

I also take 40mg Celexa and I take Prazosin at bedtime. I take Xanax for anxiety/panic. Never tried Abilify though.

I decided to stop taking the Buspar because of its lack of effect on me. They also tried me on Vistaril but I determined that it was only like a strong version of Benadryl. There is always a hope in a doctors mind that something as simple as an antihistamine will be the answer to your anxiety. However when it's not determined to be effective for your anxiety and panic, the extra meds make for a pretty decent sedative for sleep to have laying around. (Never combine vistaril with benadryl or take more than the recommended doses of either drugs.) These medications will start to shut down your breathing if you overdose.

I am down to 20mg of Cymbalta in the morning along with my blood pressure medicine. At night I take 0.2mg clonidine which helps keep my mind out of hyperspace by blocking adrenaline responses in the brain. It helps keep my vivid dreams from being horrific nightmares.

I also take Lysine 500mg which boosts serotonin, melatonin 5-10mg, fish oil 3000mg.

On nights where I really cannot rest - I also take 50mg of Benedryl. I can take Sonata once in a while - when I am not on call, because it really puts me to sleep, but often makes the nightmares worse.

I have Xanax for when those really bad panic attacks occur - but I try to plow through rather than resort to Xanax.

Because benzos and sleeping pills can be addictive, I minimize their use. I have enough problems without becoming habituated to substances.

The atypical antipsychotics like Abilify haven't held up well under scrutiny, and they do increase some serious complications. One of my previous psychiatrists tried to put me on it, but after I read up on it, I declined the Abilify and found a different psychiatrist.

As a patient, I think meds are exceedingly helpful in facilitating therapeutic goals - but by themselves, medicines are not enough IMHO.

My sister just recommended some natural supplements to manage stress. "Dong quai" is at the top of the list, along with "fish oil." I'm trying them in January when I visit.

Dong Quai is a plant estrogen. Just because it's natural doesn't mean it's necessarily good for us. There are lots of dangers regarding exposure to estrogens.

Has anyone tried buspar, or know anyone who has?

Buspar made me angry and violent. Anger is a side effect to watch for, and doctors are likely to attribute it as a symptom as PTSD rather than a medication side effect, ESP when it gradually ramps up instead of instantly being noticeable immediately after starting it.

Btw, I was pushed to the max dose, 90mg/day.

Try vitamin B complex

B vitamins are energizing, read AGITATING. Avoid many that have 10,000% of the RDA of multiple b vitamins. The gummies tend to have normal amounts of b vitamins, ie ~100% of the RDA. More isn't necessarily better!

Hi I haven't been officially diagnosed but am 100% that's what I have from being raped. I have tried busbar for general anxiety in the past all it did was make me feel really dizzy and sick, that's been the on only anti anxiety med ive tried. I feel I have been able to battle threw the majority of facing ptsd but it's come to my realization I would probably be able to handle school vs battling threw flashbacks from triggers has been a struggle to keep up. Ive started smoking since my anxiety is that intence I know smoking is bad but its better then being stuck in anxiety and being unable to do my homework. I'm wondering if I don't feel counseling has helped at all for when I went for grieving. Do any medicines make it worth the hassle? Also would there be any harm in just telling my dr. im only experiencing general anxiety? I don't want to be dishonest but I don't feel comfortable talking about it due to why... I don't want to backtrack my progress but I don't want to not seek help if I should be please let me know. thanks, and sorry if this is asking over your original question im new to this site.

I think I put a shout out to Klonopin on this thread which I'd now like to retract. I would only recommend it at low dose for panic attacks. Even for sleep (which is what I took it for) it's no good because you build up a tolerance to the sedative affects very quickly. Luckily I haven't taken it very long and it's still a pain to get off of.
