Recent update is that there were two shooters, brothers, and their mom was the kindergarten teacher. One brother in custody, the other dead at the scene. They murdered the kids in the kindergarten class along with their mom, principle and school psychologist and others. Also, another family member was found dead in the families home is what I read.

I hope the second perpetrator dies a very slow painful death.

My oldest is in elementary school and my son is about to start next year. I think homeschool might be a better option.

EDIT: now that they have more of the story due to investigation. The confusion over the second perp was because the shooter was carrying his brothers ID. His brother was taken in for questioning in NJ, but apparently this isn't related. The shooter murdered his mother in her home, and used her guns to slaughter the children for absolutely no reason.

I am ashamed to be an American.

I'm so torn up today. Memories of being a terrified 3rd grader huddled with my Mom and siblings while my angry, drunked dad shot up our basement are coming through. I went over to the liquor store and looked over the bottles.

But my kids need me, and I cannot let them throw me under again. I worry about my siblings. UGH.

I'm having trouble with this news too and I have a say a drink would be good right about now. But.. no. Having had a gun shot at me when I was a kid, I can imagine the terror and horror these kids are going to wake up to once it sinks in. I hope they all have parents and counsellors who will be able to help them heal from this.

This will probably never change as it goes against a really stupid amendment, that I'm sure the writer of, would be horrified and probably be the first to slap everyone in the face, for taking this so literally that they would allow children to be murdered over and over again for absolutely no sensible reason. I fear this mentality is starting to seep into Canada more and more.

I will be moving if Canada ever starts to get as lax with gun laws as the states. England and Australia are pretty viable options for immigration from Canada.

As we speak today yet another state has legalized concealed carry in schools, pre-schools, daycares, churches...but not in their State legislature.

I also question the point of making things like this news worthy events. Seems a lot of these people are out for their 15 minutes of fame. And some of these stories would give other mentally disturbed people ideas that they may not have thought up on their own. I can't imagine, either, that this helps any of the victims involved, having this new spread through the world at such a quick rate. Maybe they should consider cutting new stories like this down to bare minimums and focus on positives that come out of this. In general focus on more positive things that people are doing in their communities. Why do murders get the prime headlines constantly and people who are fund raising for shelters etc don't as often or ever.

Very very sadly, it seems too soon to be bringing up this thread again.

I am old enough to remember the attitudes of people in the UK to domestic disputes being investigated by the police - people felt that what went on behind closed doors, in families, should be private - and that interference in family life was an invasion of privacy. The argument for that supposed 'human right' to conduct family life as you wish can sound very appealing. But spouses and children suffered because of it.

I see the same thing with the American gun laws. However convincing an intellectual argument for the right to self protection might seem. Children are dead now - for goodness sake, what more does it take to change something.

I am so sad to hear this news. I just turned on the news. I pray for the family left behind.

My hope is that as much attention that gets paid to gun control gets paid to mental health care in this country. Tragic, tragic. I am completely devastated for those kids and families.
