Australian Open Is Here -- Whoo

It's amazing how drastic things change between female and male matches. When I took the above picture of the Andy Murray game, there was a female match first. The stands were about 1/4 full, and this is a paid reserved seating stadium. It went to about 1/2 just before the game started, and then by half way through the first set it was full, barely an empty seat. When it ended, which was for Errani to play, back to about a 1/4 full.

I have to admit, watching a female match vs male is like watching a slow motion, amateurish game of tennis vs tennis on steroids, the ball just missing the net with the power being hit, and the intensity of shots being made is just insane. The female games are actually pretty lazy in comparison to the male games. I guess that has more to do with athleticism and genetics of male vs female muscle mass... but now seeing it for my own eyes, I appreciate the differences.

I still like the female games, hence I watched them and will continue to watch them. The upper level ladies do put more into their play, hence a better quality of game. The lower ranked ones... not so much.

I'm going back this weekend now... so much to do in there its just not funny.

Go Bouchard!!

@anthony Yes, quite a difference in the speed of play for sure. Even looking at the old dudes like Connors and McEnroe, Agassi, Borg et al and comparing them to the dudes now, it's insane to see how much faster the men's game itself has become from what it used to be.

Causes me to miss Navratilova even more because I saw her play here live and my chin was on my chest with the speed and athleticism of her play - she was playing against a man for a bit of a warm up and I had never seen anything like it (before or since).

@anthony I agree with the difference between women and mens' tennis.

It sounds seats are almost full and hard to buy. Is it? You have to do advance booking?

@City Slicker Oh wow, it's so good to meet to fellow tennis fan. Now a days kids are all about head to head, my player is better than yours. Sadly they don't know what is real tennis. Woohooo!

I think this Aus Open will be last time for Hewitt. Not sure if he will play it next year. He is playing much better this time. There are very few players left who turned pro in late 1990s.
