Depending on where exactly you live, there are hostels in the states. Communal living, but potentially not too expensive as a temporary solution. Think outside of the box too: I crashed at an ashram for a month in exchange for kitchen and housekeeping work and a small amount of money. If you have any particular skills sometimes you can find a person who needs them. One of my friends lives off of boats but while she's on land she does house management in exchange for a place to live.
