Green, What has helped me is grounding. You empty your mind of all wordiness as best as you can by closing your eyes, focusing on your senses that are taking in your surroundings. You make yourself aware of your feet on the floor or your seat on the chair (or if you are laying in bed, your back on the matress, etc.) and then notice a sound in the environment, an aroma or just the scent of the air, then open your eyes and look for several objects in the room and take note of them. Do this as often as is needed.
Also, doing deep focused breathing is often helpful, taking in a breath, holding it for a few seconds and then releasing it through your mouth slowly can help.
Our Group Therapy Leader taught me all these things in the group we work in each week. These are learned bahaviours, so they take time to learn, to get used to and most importantly, to remember to use when the tsunami hits!
I hope this can help. I don't always remember to do this, but I do sometimes. Of course, the other thing that is really helpful is to pray! Trusting God is sometimes the hardest thing of all, but it is helpful too. Just knowing that He works everything out for the good of those who love Him and are called according to His purpose does help me. (That last is a saying from the Bible).
