Dissociation?

I didn't think I had any but when speaking to someone a few days ago I mentione that I've always been able to look at something and control not actually "seeing" it and I can force myself to "not hear" something without putting hands over ears, ect.

Would you consider that to be dissociation?

Yes, as dissociation is considered anything that keeps you from being fully present in the moment. Normal people dissociate. Think of zoning out in the car or daydreaming.

Generally with PTSD it happens involuntarily as a response to upsetting stimuli (a "trigger"). But there are people who also talk about using dissociation purposefully, like you are.

I have "done" both. I have worked very hard not to use "maladaptive daydreaming" and "intentional" dissociation (now there's an oxymoron for you!) as a coping mechanism. The up side of doing this is it has made me more able to recognize when I'm having an involuntary dissociative episode so I can try to ground myself and stay present.
