I went through the a senior citizens employment agency to find the sitter for my 3 children and later 4. They ranged in age from 6 months to 12. Having 4 children, it made more sense to have someone in my home as daycare was too expensive. R watched the kids, made sure they started homework, checked in and out when they were outside playing and many times she started dinner for most evenings were filled with sports, dance, scouts, etc. I didn't expect housework to be done, but I did expect that she supervise the children in the completion of their chores.
R worked for us for us for 12 years and today she is considered a member of the family....their Grandma. It is something I would do all over again and even do sooner. It gave my children the opportunity to grow up in their home and their neighborhood. No R didn't have any special training or degrees, just the experience of raising her own children, caring for other children and an abundance of love. Nothing can teach you that and you can't buy it.
By the way, she is now 92 and when she came to work for us she was 67. Yes, she could keep up with toddlers as the last two were only two years apart. ;)
