I have chronic migraines now lasting from 2-7days now. i've had them since I was 9yrs old. At various times I've been able to control them discovering what are some of the triggers and some medications that have helped along the way. Mine are often triggered by allergies and stress. Having seen a multitude of 'experts' and other doctors throughout the years I am the best expert about my migraines than anyone else. I've discussed these from a psychological point of view, a neurological point of view and having had 3 nasal surgeries which just about ruined my sinus completely.
Experts.... So I have come to this and that is what the last neurologist let me in on which actually just crossed the t's to what I suspected anyway but wanted to know what latest options were for help medically and it was this:
-They don't know what exactly triggers a Migraine
-They can't cure them
-They know they are REAL because they can prove it with brain scans
-It doesn't matter what starts them it's how you deal with them that matters
-They say pain meds don't help but my thought is pain medication helps to relax the body so you are able to sleep because you cannot just let an episode go on and on, however, you must be very careful of rebound pain.
-There is ALWAYS something more that can be done about the pain so seek help for it, if one doctor says they can't do anything else, see someone else, just don't give up
The more I work with my therapist the less pain I have with my Migraines. I am able to ground myself and ease off the stressors that trigger them. Meditation is extremely helpful as well as exercise to keep the muscles and blood flowing since the pain tends to tense my whole body up.
I feel for you and met many people that suffer migraines who also have PTSD. Mine run in my family so is it the chicken or the egg, I have no idea, I just know I have to treat it.
Feel better,
Rain
