Etiquette Of Changing Therapists

My therapist is changing practices at the end of May. In my last session, we discussed my options, which was either following her to her new practice or switching to a different t in the current practice. I went with a third option of looking for an entirely new t. I found a trauma specialist that accepts my insurance and is actually even more conveniently located than my current t.

Initially, I was just going to call to see if she was accepting new patients, but I ended up making an appointment for the beginning of May. Would this be rude? I know that it will be unexpected, since we didn't talk about me wanting to see someone else. The plan was for me to think about things and then talk about it this week. I do have three more appointments scheduled with my current t before I'll be seeing the new one.

I really can't imagine how this would be rude. It might be rude if you cancelled at the last minute on the day of your last appointment, but this sounds like a great way to start out with the thinking/talking at your next appointment. It sounds like you are currently working with a conscientious therapist who would be glad you are finding your way and covering different options, during a time of transition that could be quite stressful to just about anyone.

**Assuming that you and/or your insurance pays for everything.

And, I wish you luck! Keep me updated? I worry so much about losing my guy, I like to hear how people manage times of transition.

Thank you. I've never changed doctors for anything other than necessity, so I wasn't sure if I was going about it the right way.
