Fabric Allergy Anyone?

I know there are lots of you on here who have immune conditions and allergies so wondered if anyone has this experience or has any knowledge about it.

I can't find any information and don't have the concentration to read up. I am also not going to bother asking a dr as there really isn't any point and it isn't a big deal.

I get severe itching with certain fabrics and rashes too. Some are easy to figure out like cashmere for example but other times it is difficult. One cotton blend fabric can be OK and the next not. It's worse when the fabric is closer to my skin such as in leggings. I have bought 4 pairs recently and can't wear any of them for very long.

Anyone else? Any information? Thanks!

Oh, and elastic is a problem. which is a problem!

I am allergic to wool products. I'm also allergic to some of the tags in clothing and usually have to cut them out. Some cotton products blended with artificial fibres could be causing sweating which isn't allowed to escape through the fibres causing irritation. It is also possible that you could be allergic to the dye or the finishing treatment on the fabric rather than the fabric itself.

Not sure that's actually helpful. The only way I can avoid being irritated by a certain fabric is by not wearing it.

For myself, I am most often more allergic to the laundry detergent or the fabric dye than I am the blend. Though I have both latex and vinyl allergy I don't have difficulty with elastic.

I'm with digger... if leggings are a problem stop wearing them. Elastic, yeah that can be a problem... I'd experiment though with detergents first. I welt around the bands and at the tail bone on the detergent thing. Even when the brand stayed the same but the manufacturer changed the ingredients I did it.

Thanks Digger. That's helpful. I want to try to find a little more of the why for me so that I buy less clothes I end up not being able to wear.

The cotton mix stuff is getting to me. It's often a high percentage of cotton and definitely not related to being hot or perspiring. Can't find anything to lounge around at home in (something I do a lot ;)).

Thanks Albatross. I don't do wool either. That OK as there are lots of alternatives. . Laundry detergent I have to be careful with but I am. Dyes I am not sure of. Will think.

I have had leggings that I am fine with. I have a holey pair at present but they need to go. They are all the same colour and some that I can't wear have more cotton.

Tricky without writing to all the manufacturers and even then a lot of production is outsourced and they might not know or tell you...

Process of elimination I guess to some extent, if you find it is happening with clothes of a particular brand. One of the problems for me is I can seem fine for something one week and be allergic to it the next, I think there are other factors involved that make me more prone to allergy at different times...this goes for foods, washing products etc as well as clothes.

With regard to the sweating, I'm not talking about excessive sweating for me or overheating really. Just usual sweating that can't 'escape' so easily so ends up trapped next to your skin.

100% cotton lounge pants/pj bottoms? something like this Link Removed

Looking at the brand is a good idea. They probably do have standard approaches to what they use.

You are right about one week being fine and the next not. From knowing more about the immune system when there are extra triggers it has a domino effect. Upset immune system = more effects all round.

I really don't think the heat and sweating issue is relevant as some of the worst cases are the highest in cotton and lowest in synthetics. I avoid anything with hight synthetics as I can't do them either.

Thanks for the link! I am hoping for something that won't make me look as if I have been in bed if someone comes to the door! Maybe I can dye them. So hard to find anything that doesn't have checks, dots or a wild fuzzy animal on it....

You are right about more air. It is very helpful. Been in a 100 % cotton dressing-gown and nothing else for yesterday and today. I may resort to the ones you linked.

Grrr... What I want is a plain preferably dark trouser of some type, 100 % cotton and with a drawer string, preferably a knit...... Any magical beings listening and open to granting my wish? :angelic::alien::D

Those do have a drawstring! :). Going to order them as a start. ..

Ps. They don't have my size but will look for something similar...
