Fishing To Calm Down

I have been fly fishing, and tying my own flies for a year now. I did a little when I was a kid, but now the only fishing I do is fly-fishing. I keep a rod in the water for the catfish for food, but I go for trout, crappie, bass, and bluegill with the fly. I first was interested in this as therapy after reading an article in the Army times.
I am not saying this will work for everyone, but I am happy to speak about this to anyone interested. You don't have to go to the classes to get benefit from this. I didn't and I really enjoy getting on rivers, streams and lakes with the fly rod. Not to mention being alone gives me time to think.
For me the best therapy has been fishing and music.

Its great unless you live in Germany where a fishing license cost more than rent for a month lol.

Yep, my back surgeon just gave me the go ahead to start fishing again.
Personally, I would just sit there with the line in the water and no bait, and not care. Its the peace and quiet, the sound of the ocean, the buzz of the mosquitos as their sucking your blood.

You an catch what ever you want. However, the point behind this is the fluid motion created between your shoulder, your wrist, your pole, your line, and your fly. Once all these have become one, you are no longer waving you hand back and fourth, you are the fly.
At least that's what it is for me.
BTW, Tying my own knots, and flies has been very rewarding. The tedious motions for me( only for this activity) pay off when I catch a monster fish. I caught the biggest fish of the year this year. A large mouth bass, he was a monster, a whole 9 ounces. Yes I'm being sarcastic. It is so hot that the fish really aren't biting. But I still go out sometimes and cast out the line.

I tried fishing once. I ripped my hand open with the hook, spent 35 bucks on a license, pulled a lot of lake moss off my line and got sunburned. Oh and 2.50 on worms.
I think I will stick to playing computer games, taking walks and shooting my .45 ....But go ahead. have some fun. if you like moss covered lines, expensive worms and sunburn...its great!
If I ever get shot in the ass with diamonds, my new hobby will be driving a Ferrari real fast.

Ok, as for worms and moss, fly fishing does not include them. The Line floats on the surface of the water, so no moss. The fly is your lure, so there is no worm. There are plenty of cheap lures.
making your own lures is the shizznit!

William,
Completely know what you're saying. I've fly fished since I was a kid. Some years ago learned to tie flys, but they never wound up looking like a real bug! Having gotten older, with arthuritus, had to pare down my hobbies and plinking won over fishing. Friends ask me to go all the time but it just hurts too much.

And you're right tying flies is very relaxing. Envy that you're where there are bass and bluegill, tons of fun to catch.

No lakes, rivers, dams, or creeks here for that. I am talking fishing in the ocean.
The sea breeze, the seagulls shitting on you etc, etc

Never been deep sea fishing, Jimmy. Would have liked to. Must be a kick when you get one of those big dudes on. Down in Florida used to be you'd see these massive sailfish mounted on the walls of resturants and such. Man, what a beautiful fish!

Have fun!

My grand-father speaks of fishing off the coast of california. Some friends of his (allegedly) hooked a tiger shark and were dragged quite a few miles, before being set free, letting go, or some such thing. I think deep sea fishing would be fun, but I didn't join the navy, because I have a terrible fear of drowning. It is an absolute Phobia. I am not afraid of water, just drowning in it. I like to swim in lakes, and pools. I like fishing of course, I just have a fear of drowning. So never went deep sea or deep lake fishing.
So I am afraid of drowning, but will jump from 10987e9r8237-8 feet out of a perfectly good aircraft, and what a friggin rush. :giggle:
