Frustrated Trying To Find A New Psychiatrist

I think he sounds awful. I do think it's fair enough for a psychiatrist to discuss with a new patient how long they've been on disability and whether there are approaches that need to be tried/tried again now. I also think it's fair enough to discuss possible over-expectation with regard to medication or doctors. But that should be a discussion, and they should listen to you before drawing any conclusions.

I can't see the point in 20 minute appointments with a new patient. If anything, I'd expect a first appointment to be longer than usual.

I'd say, move on...

My experience of finding various therapists is that there have always been quite big obstacles, and that delayed things but it all worked out in the end. I've also made some false starts in the meantime, had a bad experience, and stopped seeing someone quickly. I'm afraid I think it's part of the process, although I wish it wasn't.

I wonder if it might be worth you putting your name down at some of the places where the psychiatrist isn't currently taking new patients. Or to keep ringing them each week to check availability, however it works. They're probably the best ones! You do have the option of continuing with your current psychiatrist in the meantime. At least it might give you someone to try in six months' time, if you're still looking then. With my first therapist, for various reasons I ended up waiting about 10 months to see her. It was worth the wait.

The second psychotherapist I saw took a really long time to find, but the process of looking, and speaking to people who weren't right, did help me clarify what I was looking for and I started searching on different words/specialties. I know you've done that once already, but in my case I went through about three changes before I got to the search criteria that got me there.

I found my somatic therapist after a long search that was getting me nowhere. I then found someone on the internet who seemed perfect but was about a day's travel away from me (one way). In the end I rang that person, explained that I was looking for someone with his approach and asked if he could recommend anyone near me. He didn't know me but he was very nice and recommended three people who he knew were like-minded. One was the right one for me to see. Is there any possibility of trying something like that - maybe asking the busy psychiatrists' offices if they can recommend someone who specialises in bipolar/trauma/tricky medication issues or whatever you'd identify as criteria? (Sorry if you've already tried this.)
