Hi, my name is Alexia. As in the title of my post I was sexually abused by my father for a long time. I told my mom in 2011 and the sexual abuse finally stopped. I have three little sisters and I found out that he was going to abuse them because he had sexually absued his sister at age 11, exactly when he started with me, and exactly the same age my little sister was when I told my mom.

He's in jail now for seven years and it been really hard trying to cope with the emotional, physical, and mental issues. Contrary to children who are sexual abused, I didn't start showing symptoms until after I disclosed which was the hardest part.

I'm 18 and I feel so different from everyone else. I've been diagnosed with ptsd but I've been doing some research and I think I may have cptsd since the abuse went on for so long and my behaviors match up. My mother was a mental health counselor but she has been diagnosed with ptsd as well. I feel as if I may have seperation anxiety with her as I break down when she's gone which is unusual for an 18 year old girl.

I've also had physical alements. Gastrointestinal issues arose last summer and in September I was in the hospital with gallbladder disease like symptoms. They took it out and my appendix as well but I'm still having problems. They diagnosed me with ibs but I think its a load of balogna because I've followed their direction but my symptoms haven't died down. It go so bad that in October I withdrew from highschool took my ged and am currently going to college. I just want to feel connected with at least somebody who understands.

IBS is commonly associated with PTSD. I have it, but the diet for me plays no role in controlling the IBS symptoms. When I am anxious, stressed or feeling any other type of emotion, my IBS plays up a whole lot more than it does when I eat certain foods which you are apparently not supposed to eat. I'm definitely a believer in IBS being associated with PTSD.

Welcome to the forum too :) I hope we can be of support to you here

Welcome Alexia.

I have 3 daughters, 22 - 18 & 6 (as well as 2 adult sons) however that's not the point of my post.

I totally agree with Smushroom as I too suffer from IBS and no matter what my diet consists of, when my anxiety is high then my IBS is at it's worst.

Hi Alexia, welcome to the forums!

Congratulations on having the strength to report your father for what he was doing. It's not as easy as people who haven't been there might think. I was also sexually abused by my father (along with every other type of abuse...) until I was 15. I was diagnosed with both PTSD and IBS at 18. As Smushroom said, IBS is common in people with PTSD as it can be triggered by stress. I know it sucks, but have patience with getting the IBS under control. I find that mine is under control most of the time these days, but it has taken me several years to identify all of my food triggers, and whenever I'm going through a particularly rough patch emotionally, the IBS flairs up too.

Best of luck with your studies, too! College can definitely be difficult when dealing with PTSD and IBS. I've been a university student for 7 years (started a new degree). There have been some really hard semesters when I couldn't possibly have managed a full course load and only took 2 or 3 courses, but I promise it does easier.

Hi Alexia,

Welcome to the PTSD Forum! :)

I am the mother of daughter's who were also sexually abused by their father. I too saw the symptoms increase after they reported the abuse and the trial was over. You really did a brave thing and I will encourage you to continue to seek counseling and support. Also, do not be so hard on yourself in regard to feeling that you are overly attached to your mother. It gets better and my youngest is now 20 and headed to college this fall. It just took a little while for her to get her feet under her so to speak.

I hope you find the information and support on this site helpful as you work on healing. There is also a sister site that you may find beneficial, MySexAbuse.com. A link can be found at the very bottom of this page.

Take care.

Debbie

Thank you all for your support. It really means a lot, especially knowing that other people are having the same troubles as I am.

You are brave and strong. We are all here for you! My symptoms did not start until my mid twenties over ten years after the most violent event in "mind" and yes after disclosure.
