I know that in certain types of therapy, such as cognitive behavioral Therapy (CBT) you are not supposed to go into the past as much as deal with the present. If your emotions, the ones that hurt, are in your past, it may be that expressing them is not what your therapist isa aiming for. If, however, you were to say that you are having trouble expressing emotions, then possibly your therapist will use therapy specifically designed to bring out your emotions.
