Hello,

I am new to the forum. I am a survivor of childhood abuse (verbal, emotional, sexual). I have disassociation issues, where I mentally check out when in a trigger comes up. My sense of self has been fractured; while I am nothing like United States of Tara, and no one would ever know if they met me I do have pieces that are like other personalities. It's all me, just divided and each piece has a function that helped me survive.

I do have flashbacks but they are always nightmares and not at a very frequent rate at the moment.

There is anxiety and of course some ptsd.

I am the spouse to a lovely veteran who also has some issues from childhood that seem to only have been compounded by deployments and military politics that really broke them down.

I am survivor and supporter!

This dynamic of individual needs does place a lot of strain on the relationship. Spouse is finally going to therapy so I am hoping that will ease some of the tension. I have been with my current therapist 3 years but have been in therapy for 6+ total.

I really like this site because while my therapist can give me great tools and advice sometimes it hearing from others who are going through similar things that really make a difference.

I find this to be true about having a veteran spouse with ptsd. Seeing the posts here from other military spouses really gives context to day to day things with my spouse- things a therapist might not have thought of because it is not their experience.

Dear Quietpool,
Welcome to this forum. You are quite right about being able to access the depth of experiences people with PTSD have. You will find plenty of support as time goes on. In the mean time, look around the forums and the threads. You will find people in situations you could help or be helped.

Thank you Mercy, very happy to have this site as a resource!

Hello and welcome, Quietpool.
I'm glad you found this site-a ptsd survivor essential! It great that you and your husband are involved in counseling.

If I may ask, what is U.S. of Tara?
I don't quite make sense of putting the U.S. and the Buddhist Goddess, Tara, together. (Subtle sensibilities and mental nuances, and puzzle-solving creativity, can be a challenge when I'm aggravated.)

Hope you get meaningful support here.

I certainly relate to fractured self, or parts of self that I can't quite blend together neatly or feel cut off or separated. It is helpful to know that other people understand. Welcome!

Welcome to the forum family. You will find good resources, listening ears and compassionate hearts to help you are your journey through this life. You will find that you will make some really great friends here that understand you. Again, Welcome.

Hello Change and thank you :)

United states of Tara was a television series featuring Toni Collette. It was about her daily life with multiple personality. The DSM has changed the definition of this disorder to DID, meaning disassociation disorder. They used to have DID NOS (not otherwise specified) which is what I would fall under. There is a lot of varied experiences with DID, but sometimes media culture focuses on representing cases like United States of Tara where a person with DID completely becomes other personalities and might even black out and not remember doing it.

Thank you, and yes it is really nice to relate to others who share this experience! I can't quite get my pieces of self to blend neatly either especially when figuring out career goals!
