The other nice thing about "patching" is that "uncomfortable eye contact" is immediately reduced by 50%!

This should be interesting Cynthia, with you guys patching opposite eyes only and me doing both eyes. Hope this isn't how Marilyn Manson got his eyes to look that way! I'm an artist by trade and definately consider myself left brain dominant...(the dreamer from hell some would say! ha!

Hey AdamAnt
My husband and I are wondering. You are an artist too, we think that means you would be right brain dominant, which would mean you would need to patch your right eye to train the brain to be more practical thinking.

YaaaaaaH

Hey guys
Help me with this please. We are confused. THis is what I thought.

# Logical, intellectualizing, practical means ...........left brain dominant......to counteract the extremes of this = patch RIGHT EYE
# Dreamy, arty, live in the moment means..............right brain dominant.....to counteract the extremes of this = patch LEFT EYE

James......... can you help with this simplistic outline and tell me if this is so? My braims wont work things out at present.

By the way, your picture cracked me up.

Also, one of the articles talked about a simple way to find out which side to patch. That was to patch both eyes one at a time for a while and the one that creates a sense of irritability or slight annoyance is the one to patch. (because that is the side that cant process easily)

Hello Cythiatoo, here's what I understand and what my experience has been.

Gotten used to wearing it on my right, but am trying to get used to wearing it on the left. I thought (warning - could be wrong) that when you cover one eye (either) it forces the left brain to calculate depth perception. Whereas normally depth perception is calculated by the right hemisphere. Thus, if I cover an eye, I "take the load off" the already overloaded (by PTSD) right brain? Maybe this is all wrong. But that's how I've been relating to it.

However, what you just posted up-thread is interesting. You see, after patching about 1 plus hours a day for about three days (going for a slow walk) with the right eye covered, my right eye (at the end of the walk) started to ache a little in a funny way. I took off the patch, the ache vanished right away. Immediately I went home, felt all organized and did a bunch of house cleaning out of the blue. Maybe I shouldn't cover the left eye then? My brain does seem to like having the right eye covered.

Now you see why I'm doing both eyes! HA!

My way of thinking is that the idea is to get the hemispheres communicating as much as possible right? I'm thinking that patching one eye might aid one set of connections and patching the other might aid another set...and when they finally meet in the middle I'll no longer hate math and will be able to stop obsessiing about learning to play the trumpet with my toes!

I am thinking this is so....patch the eye that your brain doesn't like having patched.

My husband gets an actual slight ache in the back of his head on the opposite side of the eye he is patching.

Interesting you get an ache in your eye.

I think that could be from using the eye muscles more than they are used to. What's more exciting to me, I think the fact that you did organizing and cleaning out of the blue indicates that the side of your brain not overloaded by the fear trauma took over a bit. This is great.

When you say your brain does seem to like having the right eye covered what do you mean?

Do you mean that you responded well and did constructive things afterwards or do you mean that you find it less irritating to have the right eye covered?

There are times when I feel a bit cranky when I cover my right eye and times when it makes me feel downright bloody annoyed. I think the article meant that. Cover whichever eye is hardest to tolerate.

Gawwd, I know this is all complicated, but it is a learning thing and I am glad to have you guys to talk to.

I think my hemispheres just dropped all connections and my tripper switch went off. This means I need to drink my cuppa and eat that last home made shortbread cream biscuit that is in the fridge. It's necessary and don't anyone try to stop me. My hippocampus needs it.

Cynthiatoo - let's swap notes, this is helpful.

My brain seems to like having the right eye covered, because it's used to it, probably. That's the only eye I've really had patched. I thought it would be neat to see about covering the left, it feels awkward, but so did covering the right at first. I agree with you about the slight discomfort stuff. I have slight (momentary) aches in my head while patching too. Thought the same thing about getting organized and cleaning out of the blue, too. But, that's nothing compared to this:

Have been really struggling trying to quit nicotine, for years. I have a serious issue. Very bad long term withdrawal symptoms. I mean like the kind that threaten my stability. So, been patching a couple months. Two weeks ago I stopped nicotine cold turkey. Hey, where's the withdrawal symptoms? I got hardly any! My social phobia/anxiety is way down. My sociability is fine! This never happens when I quit nicotine. Coincidence? Kinda doubt it. Amazing? I am blown away.

Hey guys,

Awesome and amazing! I am patching both eyes and the same as James I am a smoker. I have cut back considerably and am feeling pretty good about that. "Cold turkey" James as always you are an inspiration! I am going to grab my patch right now! :)

The Ultimate Ambidextrous Skill?

Folks, maybe this is the solution to left hand skill training?

Wouldn't that be a trip? I'd probably crash.

We have a book somewhere called Drawing on the Right Side of The Brain by Betty White, I think. My husband used it in Art College. It has a concise detailed group of exercises that force the right side of the brain to work more. When we find it, we are going to do it together. Some of the drawings in it are actually shown on sites to do with Lbrain/Rbrain assimilation.

I have been slack at patching and feel like crap. I got an infection in my right eye. Probably because of my Egg Carton Patch, probably some cardboard fell off into my eyeball and got stuck under my contact lense. Yiikkes..anyone would think I was weird or something, just cos I wear and chunk of egg carton for an hour a day.

Designer Eye Patches

Sorry to hear about the eye-infection Cynthiatoo - I used to get "pink-eye" from swimming sometimes, when the chlorinated water would leak past my cheezy goggles. Hey, check out the designer eye-patch I found online - think it's called eyepatch.com. I get mine at RiteAid (a large pharmacy chain) for like $2.99 usd. I got a back up patch the other day 'cause the light elastic on mine is starting to get stretched out a bit, Tied a tiny knot in the back of the elastic head band and it's ok for now. There's some online for cheap, also. Good luck Cynthiatoo, your enthusiasm is motivating!

Here's the "designer" eye-patch:
