This is appalling.

One of my favorite books when I was thirteen or fourteen was I Never Promised You a Rose Garden, about a sixteen-year-old schizophrenic girl in an asylum around maybe the seventies or earlier. The treatments described are mortifying.

Yeah that place is a certified hell hole. Constant fighting among different political groups, warlords controlling the lives of the population, a government fighting against terror groups who want to establish a caliphate, the remaining christians there either slaughtered or forced to convert to Islam just to name a few. I think that's one of the few places where you're born with PTSD because the violence is so bad there; It's really sad.

You would be quite surprised that PTSD probably is quite low in such places, because they have nothing to compare it with, hence their lives are not traumatic as such. Looking in they may be, but to them, they are not, unless they see different to compare with first. Most don't have Internet or computers, so they aren't surfing the web and viewing their culture against others.

I agree that their methods of chaining them to a wall is extreme, but then Western society straps them to a bed instead! Isn't that just as traumatic?
