I Need Some Advice

I am trying to get a service dog for myself. I have a good chance of getting one too but I am having a hard time selecting a trainer and I figured I would ask for your input. I have alot on my plate and I am trying to get back into the workforce so I can get a paycheck again. So I am looking at disability until the dog is trained. I am stuck in a house that I cannot have a puppy in for fear of upsetting the "evil ones" in the house. So any dog I get would have to at the very least be house trained. There is always a bonding time for all dogs to bond to their owners and also the same thing happens with service dogs. A service dog needs to have a very strong bond with their handler to make sure that the dog can sense and understand everything about the handler. My problem is time basically. I am having trouble choosing a trainer because of the time it would take to get the dog trained perfectly. I will call them trainer 1 and trainer 2 .

Trainer#1 Has never trained a service dog before and is charging me much less money to train the dog. She has however trained numerous therapy dogs and obedience champions. She says that she can train the dog in a month or two and that getting the public access test done is a waste of money. She has never been ADA accredited and neither has her partner. She will otherwise let me basically pick the dog and be very much involved in the training.

My problem with trainer 1 is she hasn't done this before and she doesn't seem to know what she is doing. But I think If she can get the basic obedience training and service dog task things trained I might be able to train the dog further so I could take the test myself to make sure that the dog is covered under the ADA and passed it's public access test.

Trainer#2 She has trained 6 service dogs in her 37 years of dog training. She is trying to kinda force me into buying a puppy. A golden doodle which I don't even like the idea of. She has trained service dogs before and taken them through the public access test and everything. But she costs almost 4 times more than the other trainer. And wants me to take this puppy home with me for 4 months before she even thinks about training the dog. Which I can't do.

My problem with trainer 2 is that she seems to be forcing me into a dog before even getting to know me at all. I understand the cost is also higher but she has done it before. But basically I am looking at almost a year before the dog is fully trained. plus all the costs of traveling to see her while the dog is in training. Plus she wants to move in with me for a few days when I first get the dog back from training. I am not comfortable with that at all.

That is basically what I am facing. If anyone has some advice I would be grateful for it.

I am not sure which one I would select. I did a little internet snooping as I was new to the idea of service dogs for PTSD. Here are some links I found. You will have to add the beginning prefixes to each one due to live links not being postable to the forum.

wags.net/ This one is for a link for free service dogs in the Wisconsin area...not sure if you would qualify, but it might be worth a try.

I have sent e-mails and called wags about 15 times in the last year and have never received a message back. I have been researching this for over a year now and even purchased a dog that is sitting next to me for training. He turned out not to be a good candidate for service dog work because of his fears but I didn't have the heart to tell my kids he had to go. So we are stuck with this little guy whom I love very much. I have also checked with different services in different states and the ones I have come up with either have a waiting period of over a year before you are even selected or the cost is so high that there is no way I could afford it. Even with the help of this fund raiser I am doing and even if I did several fund raisers the amount we are talking about 7 or 8,000 dollars. That I just cannot collect or afford. That is why I have narrowed it down to these 2 trainers. The first one scares me because she doesn't have the experience. The second one scares me because after training she wants to move in with me for a few days and that just can't happen. I am basically stuck with these 2 because the other one I had picked just dropped off the face of the earth and I have not heard from in almost 4 months now. Even the phone number I had for him has been disconnected.

Is there any way you can approach trainer 1 on a trial basis and assess over weeks and if not happy then get trainer 2 to step in as basic obedience seems an important first step?

I am not sure because they both require at least a partial payment up front for the dog and training. With limited income it's kinda hard to do that.

Maybe look for a completely different trainer? I definitely don't like the sound of the one who wants to come and stay tho. I've been watching videos on youtube of service dogs and they seem amazing. Good luck with this,

Louisa

Ok well a small update is that I have decided that I am going to give trainer 1 the opportunity to train her very first service dog. I spoke with her on the phone for well over an hour yesterday. She said she has been reading over the materials I have sent her explaining things about service dogs. She says that while she understands my fears she would like to be given the chance to try. Plus because of cost I have chosen her. I know I am taking a big gamble in this regard but I am trying to stay positive as she has a few obedience champions that she has trained plus some of the references she sent me gave me alot more confidence in her abilities. The big thing I see really is the time frame she's thinking it will take and the time frame it actually takes are a bit farther apart than they should be. Regardless we will be writing a contract stating that this dog will recieve the training nessasary and that if there are any problems in the future with any "odd behavior" that the dog might be doing it will be covered in the original price and not cost extra for re training. Plus what I found rather cool is that she wants to meet me and take me to several locations that she has already spoken to the shelters or breeders concerning my money issues and my cause and has gotten many to agree to a discount should I get the dog from them.

Trainer 2 on the other hand says that she already has a dog picked out for me and wants me to keep it for 4 months first. I checked into that and most big organizations do not even have their dogs start "bonding" with the owner until training is almost complete. The dog is selected trained and then the bonding begins. So her idea is a little off but not truly out of line considering other information I have read stating that a dog bonds with a person at a very young age. But it has been proven in other studies that a dog can still bond just as closely after that time. Plus personal experience with my old dog Riley proves that what she says is a lie that dog would have followed me to hell and back and he was 2 years old when I got him. Plus to be honest trainer 2's cost is just too high. I cannot afford it even with my fund raiser. Also I just get this bad feeling about her, as if she's trying to sell me on how perfect this dog is for me and she hasn't even talked to me more than once or twice.

I do think it's sort of instinctively the right choice, although of course one can't make these choices based solely on what 'feels good'. She just sounds as if she does have an awfully solid, good background in dog traing across the board, a fabulous success rate, is LISTENING to you and your needs and yes, is less expensive. All the trainers must have had thier first dog somewhere, so it's possible you'll be benefitting from the determination of someone who wishes to get into this field and will do an absolutely superb job. I was really not at all happy with the sounds of 'door number 2'. Her structure for training came across more like mandates, with you, who after all would be the owner and the person paying the bills, somehow playing a very small role in the whole thing. From what it sounded like, you could sort of sketch a vague image of the personality involved also, which is one I personally would have a tough time feeling all that comfortable around.Everyone is different-I just tend to not deal well with folks who come across as perhaps a tad inflexible to the point of maybe somewhat pushy? it's just what she sounded like, not meaning to give her a negative cast. On the other hand, perhaps #1 doesn't completely know what she's doing, but would have to bet someone of her expereince and enthusiasm ( plus the apparent desire to get into this field ) will very much make it her business to ascertain the dynamics needed across the board.

Good luck, sincerely, with your dog. I do look forward to hearing how it all unfolds, both for your well-being and also just plain being interested in how these animals improve the day to day lives of their owners. SUCH a cool field!

Take care and all the best,

Anni

Hi Popeye.

I wonder if you have ever heard of a dog named Endal, if not it is a wonderful story of a man and his service dog. The dog picked him, when his wife was a dog training session if I remember the story correctly. This is a UK story and does go back a few years, but if you just google the name Endal you will find it.

Or this will take you to the Home Page of his web site. http://www.milleniumdog.freeserve.co.uk/

Hey, Popeye,

I don't know much about dog training, but #2 sounds a bit unresonable. Blind people who get therapy dogs don't get them until the dogs are over 1 year of age....so this "you must bond now" thing sounds a bit hokey to me. I hope # 1 goes well for you. I look forward to hearing about your new dog.
